Best Mystery Manga That Keep You Guessing
Quick Answer
Best Mystery Manga That Keep You Guessing: 11 officially available picks, each with why it fits, who it's for, and where to read officially.
A good mystery manga gives you more than a solution. It gives you suspicion, atmosphere, character psychology, and panels that make you reread small details.
This is a spoiler-light guide. I am focusing on why each title is worth considering, what kind of reader it fits, and where you should check first if you want to support the official release.
Quick note: Avoid spoiling the central trick. Mystery posts should sell the experience, not the answer.

The picks
1. Death Note
Why it belongs here: The premise is simple enough to understand in one sentence, but the cat-and-mouse writing gives readers the addictive “one more chapter” feeling. It is a great bridge for people who think manga is only action or school comedy.
Best for: thriller readers and anime fans who like mind games.
Keep in mind: The second half is more divisive than the opening run.
Read officially: VIZ
2. Monster
Why it belongs here: A slow, morally serious thriller about a doctor, a saved life, and the evil that follows. It is patient, but the patience is what makes the dread credible.
Best for: readers who like crime novels and psychological suspense.
Keep in mind: It is not a quick binge; it rewards attention.
Read officially: VIZ
3. Pluto
Why it belongs here: A compact sci-fi mystery that reimagines Astro Boy material as a melancholy investigation into war, memory, and personhood.
Best for: readers who want mystery with emotional science fiction.
Keep in mind: Prior Astro Boy knowledge is helpful but not required.
Read officially: VIZ
4. The Apothecary Diaries
Why it belongs here: A court mystery about Maomao, poison knowledge, palace intrigue, and social observation.
Best for: mystery readers who like clever leads.
Keep in mind: There are different manga editions; link carefully.
Read officially: Square Enix / Manga UP! · Full Next Panel review
5. Moriarty the Patriot
Why it belongs here: A stylish Sherlock Holmes remix focused on class resentment, crime, and performance. It is theatrical in a fun way.
Best for: readers who like mystery with antihero energy.
Keep in mind: It is more dramatic than realistic.
Read officially: VIZ
6. Erased
Why it belongs here: A time-slip mystery built around regret, childhood danger, and the desire to save someone before tragedy hardens into memory.
Best for: readers who want emotional suspense.
Keep in mind: The ending is not everyone’s favorite, but the journey is gripping.
Read officially: Yen Press
7. Case Closed / Detective Conan
Why it belongs here: A long-running detective staple with bite-sized cases, clues, tricks, and a larger conspiracy in the background.
Best for: readers who want cozy procedural mystery.
Keep in mind: It is extremely long, so sample volumes before committing.
Read officially: VIZ
8. The Promised Neverland
Why it belongs here: A thriller with children, strategy, and a terrifying institution. The opening arc is especially strong because every page feels like a puzzle and a countdown.

Keep in mind: Later arcs are more divisive.
Read officially: VIZ
9. Shadows House
Why it belongs here: A gothic mystery about living dolls, shadow nobles, and a house built on secrets. The cute designs make the unease more effective.
Best for: readers who want mystery with eerie atmosphere.
Keep in mind: It starts gently before the machinery of the setting becomes clear.
Read officially: Yen Press
10. Don’t Call It Mystery
Why it belongs here: A talky, character-driven mystery series where observation and conversation matter as much as clues. Totonou’s perspective gives the cases a distinct voice.
Best for: readers who like thoughtful deduction.
Keep in mind: It is dialogue-heavy.
Read officially: Seven Seas
11. 20th Century Boys
Why it belongs here: A sprawling conspiracy mystery about childhood memory, pop culture, cults, and the stories people build around themselves.
Best for: readers ready for a long, layered mystery.
Keep in mind: The cast and timeline require attention.

How to choose from this list
If you are new to the topic, do not start with the longest or most famous title just because it has the biggest fandom. Start with the tone you actually want tonight. A short completed series is better when you need closure. A long-running action title is better when you want a world to live in for weeks. A romance or slice-of-life pick is better when you want characters more than plot mechanics.
