Berserk follows Guts, a hardened swordsman cutting his way through one of the bleakest dark-fantasy worlds in the medium. Kentaro Miura started it in 1989, and after his death his studio and a longtime friend continued it from his notes. That history matters going in: this is a decades-long work, still unfinished, and it asks for patience. Almost everyone who reads it agrees it earns that patience. At its core it's about surviving betrayal and the stubborn act of getting back up when the world keeps knocking you down.

One heads-up before you start: Berserk is extremely violent, and it includes sexual violence and body horror, especially early on. That's not a throwaway note, it shapes the whole reading experience. If that's a hard no for you, this isn't your book.

What it does well

The art is the first thing people mention, and for good reason. Miura drew armor, monsters, crowds, and ruined cities with a level of detail that still looks staggering decades later. A single full-page panel can hit like a gut punch, and the big setpieces feel genuinely enormous. You don't need to know anything about manga to see the craft on the page.

Guts himself is the other anchor. He's strong, but the series is never really about how strong he is, it's about how strength keeps failing to fix what's actually broken in him. That tension keeps a character who could've been a generic tough guy feeling human. The people around him slowly grow from strangers he'd have ignored into the reason he keeps going, and that shift is some of the best character work in the genre.

The horror is doing real work too. The monsters aren't just there to look cool; they tend to externalize the worst parts of the people who become them, like ambition and cruelty and desire. That gives the scary scenes weight beyond the shock.

Where it falls short

The biggest practical problem is that it's unfinished and updates rarely, so you're committing to a story without a confirmed ending. If that frustrates you, it's a real cost.

The pacing is also uneven. The famous early arc is tight, but later stretches slow way down, and one long arc in the middle is a notable lull for a lot of readers. The opening chapters have a rougher, meaner tone before the story finds its emotional core, so the first impression can be misleading.

Verdict

Berserk is one of the high points of the medium, and the 9-plus community scores aren't an accident. The art alone makes it worth seeing, and the character writing runs deeper than its grim reputation suggests. The catch is the content and the commitment: it's brutal, it's long, and it isn't done. If graphic darkness isn't a dealbreaker, this is close to essential dark fantasy. If it is, no amount of craft will make it comfortable, and that's fine, skip it without guilt.
