Quick Answer

Dekin no Mogura is worth reading if you want a genuinely funny, well-crafted supernatural comedy from an experienced creator -- its 2026 Shogakukan Manga Award win reflects real quality, and it's a strong pick for readers who like their ghost stories laced with humor rather than straight horror.

Quick Verdict

7.8out of 10

“The slow-burn mystery around Mogura's true nature takes real patience to unravel, but the blend of deadpan comedy and genuine supernatural intrigue makes the wait consistently entertaining.”

Best for: Readers who want a supernatural comedy that blends genuine ghost-story intrigue with sharp, deadpan humor.

Not for: Readers who want fast answers about the central mystery rather than a slow-building reveal of what's really going on.

Overview

College students Magi and Yaeko rush to help after watching a man get struck on the head by a falling dictionary, only to be met with flat refusal -- he wants nothing to do with police, paramedics, or their concern. That alone would be odd enough, but it's what happens afterward that really unsettles them: the man, who introduces himself as a self-proclaimed hermit named Mogura, walks away completely unharmed from an injury that should have killed him. As Magi and Yaeko keep crossing paths with him, their world starts to change, and they begin seeing ghosts and spirits that were apparently there all along.

Natsumi Eguchi -- creator of the supernatural comedy Hozuki's Coolheadedness -- writes and illustrates Dekin no Mogura for Kodansha's seinen magazine Morning, ongoing since 2021 with 11 volumes released in Japan; K Manga publishes the English release digitally. The series won the 71st Shogakukan Manga Award in 2026.

What it does well

Eguchi's comedic instincts, well established from Hozuki's Coolheadedness, are on full display here -- the series has a sharp, deadpan sense of humor that makes even its more unsettling supernatural moments land as genuinely funny rather than tonally jarring.

The central mystery around Mogura -- what he actually is, why he can't seem to die, and what his connection to the spirit world really means -- is also handled with real patience, steadily revealing new layers without rushing to over-explain itself too early. That slow-burn approach has clearly resonated, reflected in the series' recent industry recognition.

Where it falls short

That same patience can be a real ask for readers who want quicker answers -- the story takes its time doling out information about Mogura's nature, and some readers will find the pacing of its central reveal frustratingly gradual.

Being an ongoing series also means there's no complete arc yet to fully judge against -- readers are investing in a mystery that hasn't paid off in full.

Verdict

Dekin no Mogura pairs a genuinely funny, deadpan comedic voice with a well-constructed, slow-building supernatural mystery, and its recent award recognition reflects real craft behind both. It asks for patience with its pacing, but for readers who enjoy ghost stories laced with humor, it's a consistently rewarding ongoing read.
