The First Night With the Duke cover - Next Panel review

Quick Answer

If you like the 'reincarnated into my favorite novel, now stuck with the male lead' setup done with genuine comic timing, yes. If you've read a dozen of these already, it won't reinvent the formula for you.

Quick Verdict

WebtoonMinor SpoilersCompleted
7.0out of 10

“Funnier and faster-paced than most isekai-romance manhwa in its lane, even if the setup is one you've seen before.”

Best for: Readers who enjoy the reincarnated-into-a-novel romance trope and want one played mostly for comedy.

Not for: Readers who want a premise they haven't already seen several times in isekai-into-a-novel romance.

Overview

Ripley knows this story. She's read it a dozen times — the novel where a plucky heroine wins over a brooding duke. So when she wakes up inside it as a minor noble, her plan is simple: stay out of the way and watch her favorite romance play out from a safe distance. That plan survives about one wild party, after which she wakes up next to Duke Zeronis, the novel's male lead, who's now convinced he owes her — and wants — a great deal more than an apology.

What it does well

The best thing The First Night With the Duke has going for it is speed. A lot of reincarnated-into-a-novel romances spend their first stretch just establishing the rules of the world; this one skips straight to the chaos and lets Ripley start scrambling immediately, which makes the opening chapters genuinely fun instead of a wait for the premise to kick in.

Ripley herself is the other big strength. She's not a passive audience surrogate waiting for the plot to happen to her — she's constantly trying to redirect events back toward the "correct" story, and watching those plans fail in increasingly funny ways is most of the appeal. The comic timing around Zeronis's single-minded devotion is sharp without undercutting the romance; it's funny because he means it, not because the story is winking at you.

The art carries a lot of that comedy, too — reaction shots and body language do real work here, and the character designs are expressive enough that the humor lands even in quieter scenes.

Where it falls short

If you've spent any time in this specific corner of manhwa — reader gets pulled into their favorite novel, ends up entangled with the male lead instead of the heroine — you already know the general shape of where this goes. It executes the formula well, but it is still the formula.

The original heroine, who Ripley was rooting for in the first place, gets sidelined pretty quickly once the plot shifts toward Ripley and Zeronis, which makes the story's early "I just want her to get her happy ending" hook feel a little abandoned. A handful of side characters also exist mainly to throw obstacles at the leads rather than carrying real motivations of their own.

Verdict

This is a well-executed example of a crowded subgenre — funnier and more confidently paced than a lot of its competition, even if it never tries to be anything other than exactly what it looks like. If the premise appeals to you at all, this is one of the better versions of it.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • The premise commits to the bit fast — no slow setup, you're in the chaos within the first couple of chapters.
  • Ripley is proactive instead of a passive bystander; she keeps trying to fix things, which keeps the plot moving instead of stalling on her confusion.
  • The comic timing is genuinely sharp, especially in how it plays the male lead's obsessive devotion for laughs without losing the romance thread.
  • The art is clean and expressive, which matters a lot for a story that leans this hard on reaction faces and physical comedy.

Weaknesses

  • If you've read other 'isekai into my favorite novel' romances, the broad shape here won't surprise you.
  • The original heroine gets pushed to the side fairly quickly, so her arc ends up thinner than it could've been.
  • A few side characters exist mostly to create obstacles rather than feeling like people with their own stakes.
