Gangsta. follows Nicolas and Worick, two independent problem-solvers known as the Handymen, working the criminal underside of Ergastulum, a quarantined city split between the mob, corrupt police, and genetically enhanced fighters called Twilights. Nicolas is deaf and communicates in sign language; Worick is a gun-for-hire with a complicated personal history in the city's power structure. Kohske builds the manga around their partnership and the jobs too dangerous or too dirty for anyone else to touch, while slowly widening out into the politics and violence underlying Ergastulum's uneasy balance of power, and into the Twilights themselves: engineered soldiers whose superhuman abilities made them useful in wartime and disposable once the fighting stopped.

What it does well

The Nicolas-and-Worick partnership is the manga's real strength: two men who've built a functioning, trusting relationship out of very different kinds of damage, communicated through small, specific details rather than exposition. Kohske writes action with real weight and consequence; fights read as genuinely dangerous rather than choreographed spectacle, and the worldbuilding around the Twilights gives the setting's violence a coherent underlying logic instead of just atmosphere. The VIZ Signature line's confidence in the title is earned: this is craft-forward, adult-aimed crime fiction that treats its characters, disabled and otherwise, with real specificity rather than shorthand, and Kohske's panel layouts and linework give the city itself a lived-in, grimy texture that matches the story's tone.

Where it falls short

The practical reality of reading Gangsta. is the biggest issue. After fifteen years of serialization, the story sits at only eight collected volumes, and creator Kohske has been managing a serious chronic illness that's kept the manga on extended hiatus for years at a time. Readers going in should know this is a long-term commitment with real, health-related uncertainty about pacing, not a normal publication gap between volumes the way most ongoing manga have. The plot itself, once you're caught up, can also move slowly between major story beats, matching the deliberate, atmosphere-first pace of the character writing.

A genuinely well-crafted crime drama built on one of manga's more quietly compelling partnerships, let down only by a release schedule shaped by real circumstances outside the story's control. Worth starting for readers who want adult, character-driven crime fiction, with the clear understanding that new chapters arrive rarely and unpredictably, and that catching up won't take long precisely because there isn't much yet to catch up on.
