“This manga trades the original film's music-driven energy for a quieter, more intimate look at the same regrets, and mostly succeeds.”

Best for: Readers who want a bittersweet small-town drama about unfinished dreams and the distance between who you were and who you became.

Not for: Readers who want their supernatural premise played as straightforward fantasy rather than a metaphor for regret and arrested growth.

Overview

Thirteen years ago, Shinnosuke planned to leave his small town with Akane, the woman he loved, to chase a music career. Their plans fell apart after her parents died, leaving Akane to raise her younger sister Aoi alone while Shinnosuke left without her. In the present, a teenage version of Shinnosuke — still eighteen, never aged, bound to the old practice hall where he used to play — appears in town, unsettling both sisters' lives as the adult Shinnosuke, now thirty-one, also returns.

What it does well

Her Blue Sky's central conceit is a clever way of putting regret on the page literally: the 'teen ghost' isn't a time traveler but a piece of Shinnosuke's own unresolved past, still eighteen and still carrying the feelings he never got to act on. That lets the manga explore what it means to grow up and move on without resorting to a more conventional flashback structure, and it gives Akane's side of the story — staying behind, raising her sister, watching the person she loved build a life elsewhere — just as much weight as the more unusual supernatural hook.

The small-town setting and the dynamic between Akane and Aoi do a lot of the grounding work here, keeping the story feeling like it's about real people even as its premise gets stranger. Readers familiar with the Anohana and Your Lie in April team's other work will recognize the same interest in grief, unfinished business, and what's left unsaid between people who care about each other.

Where it falls short

The 'living ghost of a younger self' concept takes a chapter or two to fully land, and readers expecting a more straightforward romance or fantasy premise may need some patience before the emotional logic clicks into place. Coming from the film, the manga's pacing can also feel more compressed, trading some of the original's musical and visual atmosphere for a tighter page count. And since there's no official English release, access means tracking down import copies or digital raws rather than a straightforward licensed purchase.

Verdict

Her Blue Sky is a quieter, more intimate companion to its source film — a bittersweet story about the gap between who you were and who you became, told through an unusual but effective supernatural hook. It's a worthwhile read for fans of the original or anyone drawn to small-town dramas about regret and growing up.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • The central idea of a teenage 'living ghost' version of a man's past self, bound to the town he left behind, is a genuinely interesting way to dramatize regret and arrested growth without resorting to literal time travel.
  • Akane's situation — staying behind to raise her younger sister while the person she loved moved on without her — gives the story real emotional weight beyond its supernatural hook.
  • The small-town setting and the sisters' relationship ground the more unusual premise in something relatable.
  • As a manga adaptation of a film by the Anohana and Your Lie in April team, it carries over that creative team's interest in grief and unresolved feelings.

Weaknesses

  • Readers coming from the original anime film may find the manga's pacing and emotional beats feel compressed by comparison.
  • The 'teen ghost of an adult's past self' concept takes some patience to fully click with, and the opening chapters lean on readers accepting an unusual premise before the emotional payoff arrives.
  • There's no official English release, so you're looking at import copies or digital raws to read it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Her Blue Sky finished?

Yes. The manga adaptation ran from 2019 to 2021 and is complete at 4 volumes.

Is this the same as the anime movie?

No, it's a manga adaptation of the 2019 anime film, retelling the same story in comic form rather than being a direct transcription of it.

Does this involve actual time travel?

Not literally. The 'past self' who appears is closer to a living ghost tied to unresolved feelings than someone who traveled through time, and the story keeps the romantic pairings age-appropriate within each timeline.

Where should I start — the manga or the movie?

Either works as an entry point, but the film has a more widely available official release, so many readers watch that first and come to the manga for a different take on the same story.
