Overview

Jujutsu Kaisen is a dark action series by Gege Akutami. Yuji Itadori, a good-natured high-schooler with freakish physical strength, swallows a cursed object to protect his friends and ends up sharing his body with Sukuna, one of the most dangerous curses in existence. He's pulled into the hidden world of jujutsu sorcerers, who fight the curses born from human fear and death. The series is complete in thirty volumes. This review stays spoiler-free.

What it does well

Jujutsu Kaisen is fast, stylish, and genuinely dangerous. Akutami's art is loose and kinetic, the fights have a real sense of speed and threat, and the series isn't afraid to hurt or kill characters you've grown attached to. That willingness to follow through gives every major battle weight that a lot of shonen lacks.

The cursed-energy system is a strong engine for those fights. Techniques have rules, costs, and clever counters, so the best clashes are about outthinking an opponent as much as overpowering them. When the series sets up a duel between two prepared sorcerers, it can be gripping.

The cast carries a lot of the appeal, too. The core trio is easy to like, the mentors and villains are charismatic, and the modern, slightly grim tone gives it an identity distinct from the shonen that came before it.

Where it falls short

The biggest knock is the latter half's pacing. The later arcs get crowded and move quickly, and between dense explanations and a sprawling roster of fighters, it can get genuinely hard to follow who's doing what and why. Some readers love the chaos; others find it muddled.

The sheer number of characters introduced late means a few get little room to land, and the story sometimes tells you a fight was a big deal more than it lets you feel it. The result is a finish that divides readers more than the strong, focused opening did.

Verdict

Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the best modern dark-shonen, carried by stylish art, real stakes, and a smart combat system. If you want fast, brutal supernatural action with a likable cast, it's an easy recommendation, and being complete makes it easy to commit to. Just know the later stretch gets messy — the early and middle run is where it's at its sharpest.
