“Two teenagers negotiating physical intimacy through a family legal code turns out to be a surprisingly durable comedy engine, even after the formula starts repeating itself.”

Best for: Rom-com readers who want a couple already together and a comedy built on loophole-hunting rather than will-they-won't-they tension.

Not for: Readers who need a premise's internal logic to hold up to scrutiny from the first chapter.

Overview

Yuri and Keiichiro are already a couple by the second page, which tells you exactly what kind of rom-com this is going to be. He's heir to the Katsuraga family and on track to become Prime Minister, which comes with a genuinely strange rule: no physical intimacy with a partner until she's 16 and he's 18. Keiichiro is a stickler for the rules even as he resents them, so the series becomes a running comedy of two teenagers trying to find every legal loophole around a restriction neither of them actually wants -- an approved cellphone here, a shared umbrella justified as "just a favor" there.

The title is doing a meta joke about slow-burn romance series that stretch out the will-they-won't-they tension, except here the two leads are already together and the obstacle is bureaucratic rather than emotional. It's a clever enough hook to carry a series, provided you can get past how it's set up.

What it does well

Once you accept the premise, the central dynamic is genuinely fun. Yuri's free-spirited, rule-averse personality plays well against Keiichiro's rigid, duty-bound nature, and watching him rationalize each new loophole while insisting he's still respecting his family's code is the series' best running joke. His conflict between obligation and wanting an ordinary relationship with his girlfriend gives him more depth than the setup initially suggests.

The series also knows how to escalate without losing the comedy -- later volumes bring in Keiichiro's disinherited older brother Shotaro, whose own messy romantic history injects fresh energy once the "find a new loophole" formula starts to feel familiar, and the eventual shift toward Yuri's own frustration with being endlessly managed gives the later volumes some real emotional stakes instead of just more rule-bending.

Where it falls short

The opening volume asks a lot of goodwill upfront. Yuri starts dating Keiichiro without knowing his family background or even his surname, and he attends an elite all-boys school without the setup explaining much about how any of this works logistically -- it's the kind of premise you either buy into immediately or spend the whole series side-eyeing. A side character like Chigusa barely develops beyond comic relief, and the "circumventing family tradition" formula does start to feel stale by the midpoint before Shotaro's arrival shakes it up.

The repeated misunderstandings that drive a lot of the conflict also wear thin with repetition -- it's a reliable comedy engine, but it leans on the same beat (Yuri assumes the worst, it turns out to be nothing, they reconcile) often enough that the resolution occasionally feels inevitable rather than earned.

Verdict

Let's Do It Already! gets a lot of mileage out of a genuinely clever premise and a well-matched couple, even if the setup requires some patience and the middle volumes repeat themselves before Shotaro freshens things up. It's a comedy-forward romance that mostly delivers on its own joke, and it's worth it if a rules-lawyering slow burn between two people who are already together sounds more fun to you than the genre's usual pining.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • A genuinely clever hook: the couple is already together, so the comedy comes from bureaucratic loophole-hunting instead of pining
  • Yuri and Keiichiro's rule-averse/rule-bound personality contrast carries the central dynamic
  • Shotaro's arrival injects fresh energy once the core formula starts to feel familiar

Weaknesses

  • The opening premise asks for a lot of goodwill about how little logistical sense the setup makes
  • Side characters like Chigusa stay mostly comic relief without real development
  • Repeated misunderstandings as a conflict engine wear thin by the midpoint
