His first reaction isn't dread so much as relief: whatever this place is, at least he can finally rest.

What it does well

The nightmares-as-premonition setup is a clever twist on the reincarnation formula, and it does real narrative work: Ujin isn't a blank slate dropped into a new world with no context, he's someone who has effectively been previewing this exact setting for over a decade before ever setting foot in it. That gives his adjustment a different emotional texture than the usual isekai shock-and-adapt arc — there's a strange, dark humor to a character finding relief in a demon-infested nightmare world simply because it means the nightmares are finally over.

The art carries a lot of the atmosphere here, using full color effectively to sell both the horror-tinged demon encounters and the more grounded action beats. Ujin's voice also stands out: he reads as tired and pragmatic rather than eager or heroic, which fits the premise and keeps him from blending into the crowd of similarly-premised protagonists. The pacing moves briskly into the world's actual stakes — the Church, the demons, the mercenary life — rather than spending too long on setup.

Where it falls short

As a newer series, the wider cast and the Church-versus-demons conflict that frames the setting are still fairly thin — readers get glimpses of the larger world, but not yet the depth that a longer-running series would offer. The clever framing of the premise also only carries the story so far; once Ujin settles into his new circumstances, the plot mechanics — a reincarnated lead using foreknowledge to navigate a hostile fantasy world — are familiar genre territory. Some of the worldbuilding, particularly around magic and the specifics of the demon threat, is introduced quickly enough that it can feel like a lot to absorb in the early chapters.

Life of a Demon Hunter takes a well-worn reincarnation setup and gives it a genuinely clever emotional hook, backed by strong art and a distinctly weary protagonist.
