Overview

Myoujin is a mysterious young man who can see, talk to, and get rid of hostile spirits that ordinary people can't perceive. After a near-death experience, high schooler Himeno gains that same sight, and with it, the attention of a vengeful spirit that's been targeting her since childhood. Together, they start dealing with the dead that the rest of the world can't see.

What it does well

This is genuinely creepy stuff. Iwashiro draws haunted spaces and hostile spirits with real dread rather than leaning on cheap jump-scare imagery, and the early chapters in particular build tight, self-contained scares that hook you fast before the larger plot takes over. There's a confident sense of atmosphere here that a lot of horror manga reach for and miss.

Myoujin and Himeno make a strong central pair, too. He's controlled and a little unreadable; she's someone thrown headfirst into a world she never asked to see. The dynamic between a confident mentor and a reluctant new 'seer' gives the story a solid emotional spine even as the ghost-of-the-week structure plays out. If you've read Psyren, you can already spot some of the same instincts for staging a fight and building dread that Iwashiro would sharpen later — this is clearly an earlier, rougher version of that same skill set.

Where it falls short

The series was cut shorter than its story seems to have been building toward, and it shows. The conclusion moves fast and wraps up plot threads that had room to breathe, which makes the later chapters feel compressed compared to the patient build-up before them. Readers who want a slow-burn mystery with a big final act may come away feeling shortchanged.

The supporting cast outside the two leads also gets comparatively little room to develop — this is very much Myoujin and Himeno's story, and everyone else mostly exists to be haunted, threatened, or explained to. And realistically, availability is the biggest hurdle: there's no official English release, so you'll need to look elsewhere to actually read it.

Verdict

A genuinely creepy, well-atmosphered ghost story that shows an early version of the horror instincts Toshiaki Iwashiro would later bring to Psyren. The compressed ending and thin supporting cast keep it from greatness, but as a compact, focused horror manga, it's worth seeking out if you can find it.
