Overview

Yoshioka has recently lost his wife when his adult children hand him down Ponko, an outdated housekeeping robot from an era when human-like robots were already being phased out. Ponko tries her best, but her best comes with constant glitches and mishaps — and somewhere in the process of dealing with them, Yoshioka starts finding her presence genuinely valuable. Keita Yatera's Ponkotsu Ponko ran in Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits from 2019 to 2021, completing at ten volumes.

What it does well

The comedy works because it never loses sight of what Ponko actually means to Yoshioka. Her malfunctions are legitimately funny, but the manga keeps that humor in service of the relationship rather than treating her as a pure gag machine, so the laughs and the emotional throughline reinforce each other instead of pulling in different directions. Yoshioka's grief gets handled with real restraint, too — the manga doesn't rush to have Ponko fix his loneliness in one big moment, letting her presence matter to him gradually, the way actual companionship works.

The obsolete-robot premise also does some quiet thematic work: there's a gentle commentary here about being outdated and still useful that never tips into an overwrought message episode. And at ten volumes, the whole thing stays a manageable, focused read that doesn't try to stretch a fairly simple, low-stakes premise further than it needs to go.

Where it falls short

The low-key, slice-of-life pacing is a real limiter for anyone wanting a more eventful or high-concept robot story — this is a gentle, comfort-read pace throughout. Some individual chapters lean more on a gag-of-the-week structure than pushing the relationship forward, which can make stretches feel episodic rather than cumulative. And right now there's no official English release, so reading it means going through fan translations.

Ponkotsu Ponko is a gentle, well-observed comedy that uses a malfunctioning robot as an unlikely, effective vehicle for a story about grief and companionship. If you want a low-stakes, comforting read with real heart underneath the jokes, this delivers. If you want an eventful or high-concept sci-fi robot story, this isn't that.
