Is Real Girl Worth Reading?

Quick Answer
Real Girl is worth reading if you want a grounded high school romance that takes its central couple's mismatched personalities and looming deadline seriously -- it's a better fit for readers who want emotional stakes over a breezy rom-com.
Quick Verdict
“Iroha's gruff, hard-to-read delinquent persona takes a while to soften, but that slow thaw -- paired with the honest, ongoing threat of her moving away -- gives the central relationship real emotional stakes.”
Best for: Readers who want a grounded, somewhat bittersweet high school romance between two mismatched personalities with a real ticking-clock stakes built in.
Not for: Readers who want a breezy, low-stakes romantic comedy without a looming separation hanging over the relationship.

Overview
Hikari Tsutsui is a quiet, self-described otaku who's always found fictional girls easier to deal with than real ones. That makes it all the more baffling when Iroha Igarashi, the school's most notorious delinquent, asks him out after the two are paired together for pool-cleaning duty. Hikari reluctantly agrees, only for Iroha to immediately complicate things further: she's moving away because of her father's job in six months, putting a hard deadline on whatever this relationship turns out to be.
Mao Nanami wrote and illustrated Real Girl for Kodansha's Dessert magazine from 2011 to 2016, complete at 12 volumes, with Kodansha Comics publishing the English release digitally.
What it does well
Real Girl takes real care with its mismatched central pairing. Rather than rushing Hikari and Iroha into an easy romance, the manga spends genuine time on their awkwardness, miscommunication, and gradually shifting dynamic, which makes the relationship feel earned rather than assumed.
The built-in deadline of Iroha's move also gives the story a steady undercurrent of stakes that a lot of high school romances don't have, and Iroha's arc from guarded delinquent to someone willing to be vulnerable is handled with a surprising amount of emotional nuance.
Where it falls short
The early volumes ask some patience -- Hikari's passivity and Iroha's initially prickly, sometimes harsh treatment of him can make the relationship's starting point a rockier sell than a typical rom-com opening.
The constant presence of Iroha's looming departure also gives much of the story a more melancholic undertone than readers expecting a straightforwardly lighthearted romance might want.
Verdict
Real Girl is a grounded, patiently built high school romance that uses its central deadline to give real emotional weight to an otherwise familiar mismatched-couple premise. It asks for some patience early on, but the payoff of watching two guarded people open up to each other, against a ticking clock, makes it a worthwhile, bittersweet read.
