The setup gets real mileage out of the contrast between who Jake was and where he's landed: a man who fought and killed his way up from nothing, now sitting on wealth and status he never had to earn the first time around, and the friction between his mercenary-honed instincts and his new noble surroundings gives the early chapters real texture. His combat background also means he's not starting from zero the way a lot of reincarnation leads do, he already knows how to fight, lead, and read a dangerous room, he's just applying those instincts somewhere with far higher stakes and far more to protect. The full-color art handles the European-fantasy nobility backdrop cleanly, giving House Valdek's wealth and status real visual weight. And it's found a real, sizable audience relatively quickly since debuting, a good sign for a series still finding its footing.
