Overview

Cha Yeon-woo's twin brother Jeong-woo died climbing the Obelisk, the Tower of the Sun God — a place where multiple universes and dimensions intersect, and where climbers compete for power under the call sign system. When Yeon-woo finds his brother's pocket watch and a hidden diary detailing exactly how and why Jeong-woo died, he decides to climb the Tower himself, using his brother's recorded knowledge as a map and adopting the call sign Cain to hunt down everyone responsible. Second Life Ranker adapts Sun-Woo Hwang's web novel into a webtoon with art by Sa Doyeon, and it's currently in its fourth ongoing season.

What it does well

What separates Second Life Ranker from a lot of tower-climbing manhwa is how personal the premise stays even as the power fantasy scales up. Yeon-woo isn't just grinding floors for strength — every step retraces his brother's actual path, using knowledge Jeong-woo left behind specifically so someone could follow and finish what he couldn't. That gives even routine floor-clearing arcs a real emotional undercurrent, and the mystery of exactly who betrayed Jeong-woo and why unfolds gradually enough to keep pulling you forward alongside the action.

Sa Doyeon's art handles the Tower's variety well, too — different floors and trials get distinct visual identities instead of blurring into generic dungeon backdrops, which matters a lot over a story that's now spanned four seasons. And that long runtime has paid off in world-building terms: factions, rules, and consequences introduced early keep mattering later, giving the story a sense of a world building on itself rather than resetting arc to arc.

Where it falls short

If you've already read Tower of God or Solo Leveling, the basic shape here — climb a mystical tower, gain power, uncover conspiracies — is going to feel very familiar, and Second Life Ranker doesn't reinvent that structure so much as execute it well.

The long-runner format has real costs too. Some floors and arcs function mainly as connective tissue between major plot beats, and the pacing can slow noticeably during those stretches. And with four seasons' worth of named characters, factions, and Tower lore, new readers picking this up will have real catching up to do before all the pieces click into place.
