Overview

She's Too Much for Me is the manhwa behind the 2020 K-drama Backstreet Rookie, and if you only know the story from the show, the source material is scrappier and funnier than you'd expect. Choi Dae-hyun runs a convenience store and hires a new night-shift cashier who turns out to be a girl he ran into years earlier under less-than-flattering circumstances. She's loud, physically fearless, and has zero patience for his cool-guy act. The rest of the series is the two of them colliding at work while a rotating cast of regulars, exes, and friends gets pulled into the chaos.

This isn't a story that's trying to be more than it is. There's no hidden depth to dig for here — it's a workplace rom-com that wants to make you laugh every episode, and for most of its run, it does.

What it does well

The best thing about this manhwa is its female lead. Saet-byul isn't written as "spunky" in the watered-down way a lot of rom-com leads get — she actually throws punches, picks fights, and refuses to perform cute for anyone's benefit, Dae-hyun included. A lot of her comedy comes from just how unbothered she is by things that would mortify a more typical heroine, and the manhwa leans into that instead of sanding it down.

The convenience-store setting also does more work than you'd think. Night-shift customers, drunk regulars, awkward restocking shifts — it gives the comedy a specific, lived-in texture instead of the generic high-school or office backdrop most rom-coms default to. And the pacing matches the tone: gags resolve fast, romantic beats land within a chapter or two of being set up, and the story doesn't pad itself out waiting for the reader to catch up.

The side characters pull their weight too. Dae-hyun's exes in particular get genuine comic timing rather than existing purely as obstacles, and a few of the funniest stretches in the later chapters come from them rather than the central couple.

Where it falls short

Dae-hyun is the clear weak point. He's set up as the straight man to Saet-byul's chaos, which works for the jokes, but it also means he barely gets an arc of his own — he mostly reacts to her rather than growing alongside her. If you're reading primarily for the male lead, there's not much here.

The humor is also almost entirely physical and broad. That's a feature if it's your kind of comedy, but it means the series doesn't have much of a second gear — there's no quieter, more grounded stretch to balance it out, so if the slapstick doesn't land for you in the first few episodes, it's not going to sneak up on you later. A handful of side-character subplots also get introduced for a joke or two and then just quietly vanish rather than paying off, which is a minor but noticeable loose end by the finale.

Verdict

As a fast, funny workplace rom-com carried almost entirely by its lead, this one works. It's not reinventing the genre and it knows it — the ambitions are small and it mostly hits them. If the drama left you curious about the source, or you just want something light and finished in one sitting, it's a fine way to spend an afternoon. Just don't go in expecting the male lead or the plotting to be doing much of the heavy lifting.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Saet-byul is the whole draw — loud, physical, and funny in a way most manhwa love interests aren't allowed to be.
  • The convenience-store setting gives the comedy a lived-in, specific backdrop instead of a generic high school or office.
  • The pacing is brisk; gags and romantic beats land every episode instead of stretching for volumes.
  • The side cast (Dae-hyun's exes and Saet-byul's friend group) gets real comic timing instead of sitting around as scenery.

Weaknesses

  • Dae-hyun himself is a fairly flat straight man to Saet-byul's chaos — he doesn't get much of an arc of his own.
  • The humor leans hard on physical-comedy slapstick, and if that style doesn't land for you early on it won't grow on you later.
  • A few side-character subplots get dropped once they've served their comic purpose instead of paying off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is She's Too Much for Me finished?

Yes — it's a complete, 68-episode series, so you can read start to finish with no cliffhanger wait.

Is this the same as the K-drama Backstreet Rookie?

It's the source material. The drama softened some of the manhwa's rougher comedy and adult-ish humor to fit broadcast TV, so the original reads a bit edgier.

Where can I read it in English?

Tapas has the full series officially translated; some episodes are free with the rest unlocked through Tapas's standard pass system.
