What it does well

The setup does its job efficiently — Isu's motivation is specific and grounded rather than abstract, and the story keeps the conglomerate that killed his father squarely in its sights instead of losing focus. The action backs that up with a grimy, brutal edge that fits the crime-thriller tone better than flashier superpowered fighting would, and the underworld setting gives Isu plenty of dangerous, morally compromised people to work through on his way up the chain. Structurally, the conspiracy angle also raises the ceiling on where this can go: instead of a simple grudge against the people who pulled the trigger, Isu is working toward taking down an entire corrupt institution, which gives the story room to escalate without needing to invent a new threat every arc.

Where it falls short

None of this is new territory. Corporate conspiracies, revenge-driven leads, and corrupt institutions hiding in plain sight are well-worn ground in manhwa, and The Cleaner executes that formula competently rather than doing much to push past it. The cast beyond Isu is still thin this early on — most side characters exist to represent one faction or another rather than as people with their own interior lives, though that's common for a series still in its first couple dozen chapters. The tone is also unrelentingly grim from the jump, which fits the subject matter but doesn't leave much room for tonal variety along the way.

Verdict

The Cleaner is a solid, well-executed entry in the corporate-conspiracy revenge genre — sharp action, a clear throughline, and real stakes behind the violence. It doesn't reinvent the formula, but if you already like watching one determined man take down a corrupt empire from the inside, this delivers exactly what it promises.
