Jin Mori, a cocky, ridiculously strong teenage fighter, enters for the thrill of a good scrap and quickly pulls in rivals-turned-friends Han Daewi and Yu Mira. For a while it's exactly what it promises — a clean, escalating fighting tournament with great characters and great brawls. Then it starts pulling back the curtain, and the "real" story underneath — borrowed divine power, gods, and a war for the world — takes over. What it does well

The action is the reason it's a phenomenon. Park's fight choreography and art are genuinely spectacular — dynamic, inventive, brutal, and gorgeously rendered in full color. The way he uses the vertical-scroll format to time a punch or reveal a transformation is masterful, and the sheer creativity of the powers and fighters keeps the spectacle fresh deep into a very long run. If you want fights that make your jaw drop, this is near the top of the medium.

The early tournament arcs are also just a blast. The core trio is likable, the martial-arts variety is fun (the series clearly loves real fighting styles), and the steady escalation of opponents hits the classic shonen-style pleasure centers. There's a real charm to it before the cosmic stuff fully takes over.

And it commits. Whatever its plot problems, the series swings for the fences constantly, with set pieces and power escalations that are pure spectacle. It never plays it safe.

Where it falls short

The plot is a mess, and that's not a minor quibble. As the scale explodes from school tournament to divine war, the story piles on factions, lore, gods, and power systems faster than it can explain or pay them off. Threads get dropped, motivations blur, and large stretches become hard to follow — you're often watching amazing fights without fully understanding why they're happening.

The ending is divisive, too. After such a long, escalating run, the finale leaves a lot of readers unsatisfied or confused, and the latter half in general trades the tight, fun structure of the early arcs for sprawling chaos. This is a series you read for the journey's spectacle, not for a clean payoff — and if plot coherence matters to you, the second half will frustrate.

The God of High School is a spectacle-first action webtoon with some of the best fight art in the medium, wrapped around a story that ultimately can't hold its own weight. The early tournament is a genuine blast, and the visuals stay incredible throughout, but the ballooning plot loses coherence and the ending won't satisfy everyone. Read it for the fights and the spectacle, keep your expectations low on story, and it's a wild ride.
