ManhwaMinor SpoilersOn Hiatus
7.3out of 10

“Palace scheming gets traded for a small, warm, very funny two-person household, and the story is better for the swap.”

Best for: Readers who want a villainess-isekai romance that leans into comedy and a cozy setting rather than high-stakes court politics.

Not for: Readers who specifically want their villainess story to stay centered on the royal court and its rivalries rather than relocating away from it.

Overview

A modern office worker wakes up as Everia Oberon, the villainess of a romance novel she recognizes immediately — and whose tragic ending she has no intention of living out. Instead of scheming to survive at court, Everia simply leaves, retiring to a remote, frigid frontier region far from the plot she's trying to escape. When she accidentally summons a fire demon to keep herself warm, she discovers she's bound him to her in a magical contract neither of them can walk away from, and the two end up building an odd, reluctant household together.

What it does well

The smartest choice The Villainess is Retiring makes is geographic: instead of keeping Everia tangled up in palace intrigue, it sends her as far from it as possible, and the story is much better for it. What's left is a small, character-focused romance between two people who start out annoyed by each other and slowly, believably warm up. The fire demon's blunt, almost dog-like personality plays well against Everia's guarded reserve, and their bickering has real comic timing rather than feeling like filler between plot beats.

Bebe's art keeps the frontier setting feeling lived-in and gives the demon a huge amount of expressive personality, which matters a lot in a story that leans this heavily on two characters carrying scenes together. The 'doomed villainess' backstory is present and does get some real weight, but the manga wisely doesn't let it drag the tone down — it's there to explain why Everia ran, not to turn the whole series into angst.

Where it falls short

The biggest practical issue right now is availability: the manhwa is currently on hiatus, so anyone picking it up is following an unfinished story without a confirmed return date. The small-cast focus that makes the central romance work also means side characters don't get much room to develop. And because the series deliberately swaps court politics for a cozy, low-stakes frontier setting, readers drawn in by the 'villainess' label expecting palace rivalries and scheming will find a different, gentler kind of story here.

Verdict

The Villainess is Retiring takes a familiar isekai premise and finds a genuinely charming angle on it by getting its lead as far from the usual villainess plot as possible. The central romance is warm, funny, and well-drawn, even if the hiatus means you're reading an unfinished story for now. Worth starting if a cozy, bickering-into-affection romance sounds more appealing to you than another round of court intrigue.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • The core romance is built on genuine bickering chemistry rather than instant attraction, and watching a reserved villainess and a blunt, dog-like fire demon slowly warm up to each other is consistently fun.
  • Moving the story away from the royal court to a remote, frozen frontier gives it a distinct, cozy small-cast feel that a lot of villainess manhwa don't bother with.
  • The 'doomed by the plot' setup is handled with a light comic touch rather than heavy angst, keeping the tone warm even when Everia's backstory gets serious.
  • Bebe's art renders the frontier setting and the demon's expressions with a lot of personality, which goes a long way in a story this character-focused.

Weaknesses

  • The series is currently on hiatus, so readers jumping in now are following an incomplete story with no confirmed return date.
  • Because so much of the appeal rests on the central duo, side characters get comparatively little development.
  • The low-stakes, cozy register is a deliberate choice, but it means readers expecting escalating court-intrigue drama from the 'villainess' label specifically will find this a different kind of story.
