Overview

Villains Are Destined to Die is a romance-fantasy webtoon adapted from the novel by Gwon Gyeoeul, with art by Suol. A girl is pulled into a brutal otome game as Penelope, its doomed villainess, and finds herself on the hardest difficulty — where almost every choice can get her killed and the love interests are as likely to murder her as fall for her. What it does well

This is one of the best examples of the otome-isekai genre, and it earns that reputation. The survival-game framing — complete with affection meters and deadly bad endings — gives it constant tension that similar stories lack, because a wrong move genuinely threatens Penelope's life. It's romance with real stakes.

Penelope is a sharp, resourceful lead, and the push-pull of trying to win over people who might kill her makes every interaction crackle. The art is gorgeous, the cast of suitors is distinct, and the mystery of the game itself gives the romance a plot to hang on.

It also balances charm and danger well. There's wit and warmth here, not just peril, which keeps it from feeling grim despite the high-stakes setup.

Where it falls short

It's firmly genre fiction. If you don't enjoy otome-isekai — the game mechanics, the bachelor cast, the trapped-in-a-novel setup — this won't be the one to convert you, because it leans into all of it.

The large roster of love interests also means some get more development than others, a few arcs circle similar beats, and because it's ongoing there's no full resolution yet. The mechanics that make it tense can occasionally feel like the story is being steered by the game rather than the characters.

Verdict

Villains Are Destined to Die is a standout in the villainess/otome-isekai space — tense, charming, beautifully drawn, and led by a heroine worth rooting for. If you like the genre at all, it's an easy recommendation and one of the best places to start. If trapped-in-an-otome-game stories aren't your thing, this is an excellent version of something you may still not want.
