Overview

xxxHOLiC is a supernatural manga by CLAMP, the powerhouse group behind Cardcaptor Sakura and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Its hero is Kimihiro Watanuki, a high schooler cursed with the ability to see spirits, which swarm and torment him constantly. He stumbles into a strange shop run by Yuko Ichihara, an elegant, enigmatic "dimensional witch" who grants wishes for an exact price. To pay for his own wish — to finally be rid of the spirits — Watanuki takes a part-time job running her shop. From there it unfolds as a series of eerie, folklore-rooted cases that slowly deepen into a melancholic story about fate, connection, and what everything costs. It quietly shares a universe with CLAMP's Tsubasa. Kodansha publishes it in English.

What it does well

The atmosphere is the heart of it. CLAMP build a world thick with Japanese folklore — vengeful spirits, cursed objects, careless wishes — and the early episodic tales are eerie, beautiful, and often quietly devastating. Few manga conjure mood this well; reading it feels like being told ghost stories by candlelight, and the standalone cases are some of the best short supernatural fiction in manga.

Yuko makes it. She's one of CLAMP's finest creations — playful, cryptic, wise, and wreathed in melancholy — and every scene she's in crackles. Around her, Watanuki grows from a high-strung kid into something more, and his prickly bond with the stoic Doumeki and his crush on Himawari give the series its human warmth.

Then there are the themes. xxxHOLiC is really about hitsuzen — inevitability — and the price of wishes, and as the episodic structure gives way to a larger story, those ideas pay off in genuinely moving ways. Visually it's striking too: CLAMP's elongated, ornate style is gorgeous, full of flowing kimono and dramatic page design.

Where it falls short

That art style is also the first hurdle. CLAMP stretch their figures to extremes here — impossibly long limbs and necks — and it's a real love-it-or-hate-it look. If it doesn't click for you, it never will.

The bigger catch is that xxxHOLiC is tied into Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Some of its most important emotional and plot beats land much harder if you've read Tsubasa too, and on its own a few late developments feel cryptic or unexplained. CLAMP also lean hard on ambiguity, and the early going is slow and episodic before the real story kicks in.

Verdict

xxxHOLiC is one of CLAMP's most atmospheric, rewarding works, and a strong pick if you love folklore, mood, and a brilliant central character. Go in knowing the art is divisive and that you'll get the most out of it alongside Tsubasa. For the right reader, it's haunting in the best way.
