Best Manhwa for Beginners: 15 Great First Reads
Quick Answer
Best Manhwa for Beginners: 15 officially available picks, each with why it fits, who it's for, and where to read officially.
Manhwa is often easier for new digital readers because vertical scrolling feels natural on a phone. These first reads cover action, romance, drama, fantasy, and shorter completed stories so a beginner can find a lane without falling into illegal scan sites.
This is a spoiler-light guide. I am focusing on why each title is worth considering, what kind of reader it fits, and where you should check first if you want to support the official release.
Quick note: WEBTOON, Tapas, Tappytoon, Manta, and Ize Press are the first places to check before trusting random aggregator pages.

The picks
1. Solo Leveling
Why it belongs here: The flagship power-fantasy manhwa for a reason: crisp combat, clean progression, and the satisfaction of watching an underestimated hunter become terrifyingly capable.
Best for: readers who want leveling, dungeons, and overpowered momentum.
Keep in mind: The emotional range is narrower than its action appeal.

2. Tower of God
Why it belongs here: A huge vertical-scroll fantasy about tests, towers, factions, and desire. The art evolves massively over time, and the world grows from mysterious game board to sprawling political maze.
Best for: readers who want long-form fantasy worldbuilding.
Keep in mind: The early art is rough compared with later seasons.

3. Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint
Why it belongs here: A reader survives when his favorite apocalypse novel becomes reality. The hook is brilliant because genre knowledge becomes both weapon and burden.
Best for: readers who like systems, apocalypse stakes, and meta storytelling.
Keep in mind: It has many scenario rules and names, so bingeing helps.
Read officially: WEBTOON · Full Next Panel review
4. The Boxer
Why it belongs here: A sports manhwa that often feels like a bleak character study. The fights matter, but the real subject is emptiness, talent, violence, and what victory cannot fix.
Best for: readers who want sports with psychological weight.
Keep in mind: It is emotionally cold by design in places.

5. Eleceed
Why it belongs here: A funny action manhwa where a kind speedster and a powerful mentor trapped in cat form make an absurdly charming team. The battles are clean, but the friendship energy is the hook.
Best for: readers who want action, comedy, and found family.
Keep in mind: The early formula repeats before the wider awakened-world stakes expand.

6. True Beauty
Why it belongs here: A romance/drama about makeup, insecurity, beauty standards, and the gap between how someone looks and how they feels. It is glossy, but the insecurity is relatable.
Best for: readers who want accessible romance drama.
Keep in mind: The love-triangle material can feel prolonged.

7. The Remarried Empress
Why it belongs here: Royal romance built around dignity, politics, betrayal, and the pleasure of watching a composed heroine refuse to be humiliated.
Best for: readers who want palace drama with a strong female lead.
Keep in mind: It is slow-burn political romance, not instant revenge.
Read officially: WEBTOON · Full Next Panel review
8. Lookism
Why it belongs here: What begins as a body-swap social drama becomes a much bigger action/crime webtoon. Its best early idea is blunt but effective: people treat bodies like moral evidence.
Best for: readers interested in social drama that turns into action.
Keep in mind: The genre shift is dramatic, so not every fan loves both eras equally.

9. The Beginning After the End
Why it belongs here: A reincarnation fantasy with academy arcs, magic training, family bonds, and progression appeal. It is familiar, but very readable when you want comfort-fantasy momentum.
Best for: readers who want fantasy growth and magic-school development.
Keep in mind: It now has an anime adaptation, so do not list it as “no anime.”

10. Unholy Blood
Why it belongs here: A completed supernatural action romance with clean art, vampires, revenge energy, and a heroine who can carry a fight.
Best for: readers who want stylish completed action-romance.
Keep in mind: It uses familiar vampire-action beats.
Read officially: WEBTOON
11. Your Letter
Why it belongs here: A short, gentle mystery-drama about hidden letters, kindness, and finding help when school feels lonely.
Best for: new webtoon readers who want a quick, wholesome read.
Keep in mind: It is very short, so the experience is more like a novella.
Read officially: WEBTOON
12. After School Lessons for Unripe Apples
Why it belongs here: A warm, slow school story with awkward friendship, early crushes, and expressive character comedy.
Best for: readers who like nostalgic coming-of-age.
Keep in mind: It is intentionally slow and everyday.
Read officially: WEBTOON
13. Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid
Why it belongs here: A historical drama that uses a mermaid-story echo to explore occupation, sacrifice, language, and love. It is beautiful and painful.
Best for: readers who want serious historical romance/drama.
Keep in mind: It is emotionally heavy.
Read officially: WEBTOON
14. The Greatest Estate Developer
Why it belongs here: A ridiculous fantasy-engineering comedy where infrastructure becomes the power fantasy. It is loud, practical, and genuinely funny.
Best for: readers who want fantasy comedy and clever problem solving.
Keep in mind: The facial-expression comedy is intentionally extreme.
Read officially: WEBTOON
15. See You in My 19th Life
Why it belongs here: A reincarnation romance about memory, grief, and choosing connection again. The heroine’s confidence gives the story a refreshing forward push.
Best for: readers who want romance with a supernatural hook.
Keep in mind: The emotional past-life material is central.

How to choose from this list
If you are new to the topic, do not start with the longest or most famous title just because it has the biggest fandom. Start with the tone you actually want tonight. A short completed series is better when you need closure. A long-running action title is better when you want a world to live in for weeks. A romance or slice-of-life pick is better when you want characters more than plot mechanics.
