“The emotional stakes run high throughout, occasionally tipping into melodrama, but the way the series ties its characters' feelings directly into their music gives even the heightened moments real weight.”

Best for: Readers who want an emotionally intense, music-centered shojo romance with a genuinely complicated three-way dynamic.

Not for: Readers who want a lower-key, understated romance without heightened emotional drama running through nearly every chapter.

Overview

Nino Arisugawa has carried a torch for her childhood friend Momo ever since he vanished from her life without warning, channeling the heartbreak into her singing every chance she gets. Years later, a chance encounter with Yuzu Yuzuriha, a classmate blocked creatively since his own painful breakup, gives her voice a new outlet -- together they form a masked band called 'in NO hurry to shout.' But Momo hasn't disappeared from Nino's life for good: he's become a famous musician in his own right, and his return threatens to upend everything she's built with Yuzu.

Ryoko Fukuyama wrote and illustrated Anonymous Noise for Hakusensha's shojo magazine Hana to Yume, serializing it until 2019 and completing the story at 18 volumes; VIZ Media publishes the complete English release.

What it does well

The love triangle at the center of Anonymous Noise is genuinely well-built -- Fukuyama gives Nino, Yuzu, and Momo's feelings real individual weight, avoiding the trap of making one side of the triangle feel like an obvious placeholder. All three relationships carry real history and stakes.

Music is also woven into the story as more than aesthetic backdrop. Performances consistently double as emotional confrontations, with unresolved feelings spilling directly into songs and lyrics, which gives the series' musical sequences genuine narrative purpose rather than just mood-setting.

Where it falls short

The series runs hot emotionally for most of its length, and readers who prefer a more restrained, understated approach to romantic drama may find some of its heightened moments tip into melodrama.

The central triangle also takes a long time to resolve, stretching across most of the 18-volume run, which can test the patience of readers hoping for a clearer romantic direction earlier on.

Verdict

Anonymous Noise is an emotionally intense, music-driven shojo romance that earns its heightened drama by tying its characters' unresolved feelings directly into their art. It asks for patience with a slow-resolving love triangle, but for readers who want their romance loud, heartfelt, and genuinely complicated, it delivers.
