What it does well

The first thing Attack on Titan nails is dread. Early on the Titans are genuinely frightening, the stakes are life-and-death, and no character feels safe, which gives every fight real tension. That sense that anyone can die at any moment is rare and it never fully lets up.

What keeps people reading, though, is the plotting. The story is built to keep pulling the rug out — every time you think you understand the world, it reframes things and the picture gets bigger and more complicated. It's one of the most ambitious mystery-boxes in manga, and for most of its run the answers are satisfying rather than cheap.

Underneath the spectacle, it's chewing on heavy ideas — freedom, fear of the other, and how cycles of violence keep feeding themselves. It commits to those themes hard, and that ambition is a big part of why it became a phenomenon.

Where it falls short

The early art is rough. Isayama's craft improves enormously over the series, but the first volumes can be a tough sell on looks alone, and some readers stall there.

The middle also gets dense with politics and lore, and there's a lot of names and factions to track once the world opens up. And the ending is genuinely divisive — plenty of readers love it, plenty feel it stumbled, and where you land probably depends on what you wanted the story to be about.

Verdict

Attack on Titan is one of the defining manga of its era, and for good reason: it's tense, ambitious, and structured to keep surprising you, all the way to a complete finish. If you can get past the rough early art and you don't mind a heavy, twist-driven story, it's well worth reading. Just go in knowing the ending splits the fanbase — the journey is the easy part to recommend.
