Overview

Junghyeok Baek spent his life as the divine demon overlord of Murim, a title that took decades of ruthless fighting and politics to earn. Descended from Divinity follows Junghyeok using everything he learned running a criminal-political empire back home to climb Salamander's power structure from the bottom, one outmaneuvered noble at a time.

What it does well

The premise earns its popularity. Dropping a murim overlord — someone used to poison, betrayal, and cultivation-level combat — into a setting built around knights and medieval-flavored politics gives the story a genuinely fresh angle on the reincarnated-noble formula. Junghyeok doesn't just have more raw power than everyone around him; he has a completely different frame of reference, and watching him read Salamander's aristocracy like an open book while they underestimate him is consistently entertaining.

The writing also resists making him a simple hot-blooded protagonist. Junghyeok is cold, calculating, and willing to let a scheme play out over dozens of chapters rather than solving everything with a sword, which keeps the story feeling more like a political thriller with action in it than a pure brawler. The female lead benefits from this too — she's written with her own political instincts and agency instead of existing purely to react to him. And the art genuinely improves as the series goes, with a visible jump in polish after the first stretch of chapters that holds up through the larger-scale fantasy battles later on.

Where it falls short

The flip side of Junghyeok's competence is that the story rarely lets him actually struggle. Opposing factions get built up as threats and then get dismantled with a speed that undercuts the tension — even readers who enjoy the series tend to agree the plot armor is thick. The fantasy setting itself is also more of a backdrop than a fully thought-through world; it borrows familiar trappings without always working out how they'd function, which occasionally shows in how conveniently certain conflicts resolve. And the later chapters get choppier and shorter compared to the more patient early arcs, a common growing pain for a long-running weekly series.

Verdict

Descended from Divinity is a strong pick if you want a cold, competent power fantasy with a genuinely clever setup — a murim master out-thinking an entire fantasy aristocracy is a fun engine for a story, even when the plot leans on it a little too hard. Go in expecting Junghyeok to win most of his fights before they start, and you'll have a good time with it.
