Distant Sky opens on a nightmare. A boy named Haneul wakes up alone in a building full of corpses, and when he steps outside, Seoul is unrecognizable: no power, no cars, no stars, just darkness and silence and the dead. Before long he meets Hyeyul, a young girl who seems to understand this broken world far better than he does, and the two of them try to survive it. Written by Youn In-wan and drawn by Sunhee Kim, it's a survival-horror webtoon that's as interested in dread and mystery as in monsters, and it's one of the bleaker, stranger things you'll find on WEBTOON.

What it does well

The art is the immediate draw. Sunhee Kim works in a grimy, detailed, painterly style that's a world away from the clean, bright look of most webtoons, and it's perfect for this material. The ruined city, the deformed survivors, the moments of sudden violence — all of it lands because the art commits so fully to ugliness and decay. This is a horror comic that actually looks like horror, and on a vertical scroll the reveals and shocks are staged with real control.

That craft feeds an atmosphere that almost never lets up. Distant Sky is relentlessly grim — the survivors run from cannibals, sinkholes, and worse, and the book treats their world as genuinely hostile and hopeless. It's willing to be disturbing in ways a lot of mainstream webtoons aren't, and that fearlessness gives it a distinct, memorable identity. Underneath the survival horror runs a strong central mystery: what actually happened to the world, what Hyeyul knows, and how it all connects. The story keeps dangling unsettling images and partial answers, and that pull is what keeps you scrolling into the next episode.

It's also ambitious. Distant Sky is part of the sprawling "Super String" shared universe, and it's clearly reaching for something bigger than a straightforward zombie-apocalypse tale. When that ambition clicks, the book feels eerie and expansive, like you're glimpsing the edges of a much larger, stranger story.

Where it falls short

That ambition is also where it stumbles. The story is told deliberately out of order, across five non-chronological seasons, and the structure is confusing on purpose. For some readers that's part of the appeal; for many others it crosses from intriguing into genuinely frustrating, especially when payoffs are withheld or buried. Characters can suffer for it too — at times they feel secondary to the mood and the spectacle, which makes it harder to stay emotionally invested in their survival. And the Super String connections, rather than clarifying things, often leave you with more loose threads than resolutions. If you want a horror story that adds up cleanly, this isn't it.

Verdict

Distant Sky is a striking, atmospheric, genuinely unsettling survival horror webtoon, carried by superb art and an uncompromising bleakness most of its peers wouldn't risk. Its scrambled structure and unanswered mysteries keep it from being an easy recommendation, and impatient readers may bounce off hard. But if you want horror that prioritizes dread and atmosphere over a tidy plot — and you're willing to do some of the assembly yourself — it's well worth the free read on WEBTOON.
