Teiichi Niiya can see ghosts, which is how he ends up spending most of his time in his school's old, supposedly haunted annex with Yuuko Kanoe — a spirit who's been stuck there for decades and can't remember how or why she died. Maybe's Dusk Maiden of Amnesia builds a horror-romance around that unresolved mystery, running in Square Enix's Gangan Joker from 2009 to 2013 across ten volumes, with an anime adaptation following in 2012.

What it does well

The central hook works because Yuuko's amnesia isn't just spooky set dressing — it's a real mystery with clues that accumulate across the series, and solving it actually matters to whether she can keep existing at all. That gives the horror elements genuine stakes instead of just atmosphere. The old school building setting reinforces that atmosphere well, giving the story a consistent, specific space to build dread rather than leaning on jump scares disconnected from any larger sense of place.

Teiichi and Yuuko's relationship is built on top of that mystery in a way that raises the emotional stakes rather than distracting from them — figuring out what happened to her isn't separate from the romance, it's tied directly to whether they get to keep any version of a future together. And balancing horror, comedy, and romance without any one of them swallowing the others is a genuinely difficult trick that the manga mostly pulls off.

Where it falls short

The comedic beats and occasional fan-service moments sometimes undercut the horror mood the story works hard to establish elsewhere, creating some tonal whiplash. Across ten volumes, some side characters and subplots read as padding rather than essential to Yuuko's central mystery. And the eventual resolution to her amnesia, while satisfying, may land as a smaller payoff than the mystery's careful buildup seems to promise.
