Overview

Miroku is the Kuchisake-onna, the Slit-Mouthed Woman -- a famous Japanese urban legend whose power depends on people still believing in her. With belief fading, she's losing her strength, and her family arranges a marriage to Koichi Sano, a teenager whose family has historically aided supernatural beings. Miroku strikes a deal: if she can scare him before his next birthday, the engagement is off. If she falls for him instead, she has to go through with the wedding. Even If You Slit My Mouth builds its entire structure around watching that bet slowly, inevitably fail in Koichi's favor.

What it does well

The premise is doing a lot of work here, and it earns it. Taking one of Japan's more genuinely unsettling urban legends and recasting her as a reluctant romantic lead is a sharp idea on its own, but the manga backs it up by writing Miroku as a real character rather than a gimmick -- she's prideful about her reputation as a fearsome legend, which makes it funnier and more affecting every time Koichi fails to be scared and she has to recalibrate. That mismatch between her self-image and the actual, gentler person underneath is the engine of both the comedy and the romance.

The manga also manages a genuinely nice balance of tones. The yokai-horror setting gives it atmosphere and a steady stream of jokes, but it never leans on that atmosphere for cheap scares at the expense of the character work -- the horror elements are texture, not the point. And unlike a lot of long-running rom-coms that stall out rather than resolve, this one commits to an actual ending, giving Miroku and Koichi's slow-burn relationship a real sense of arrival instead of an indefinite holding pattern.

Where it falls short

Eleven volumes is a lot of room for a premise built on one central bet, and the middle stretch of the series does show it -- Miroku tries something scary, it doesn't land, the two of them get a little closer, repeat. It's a likable loop, but it's still a loop, and attentive readers will notice the shape of it well before the story is done with it.

The supporting cast also doesn't get quite the same care as the two leads. Other yokai and side characters mostly exist to support Miroku and Koichi's story rather than carrying real arcs of their own, which is a missable opportunity given how strong the central relationship is. And if you're coming in expecting the horror-legend premise to deliver real scares, the tone settles into cozy rom-com territory quickly enough that it may not be what you were looking for.

Verdict

Even If You Slit My Mouth takes a genuinely clever hook -- an urban legend forced into an arranged marriage with her intended victim -- and builds a warm, well-earned romance out of it, backed by a real ending instead of an endless will-they-won't-they. The formula wears a little thin across eleven volumes, but the two leads carry it well enough that it's an easy recommendation if the premise appeals to you at all.
