Overview

A car accident should have been the worst thing to happen to Zhuang Xiaoran. Instead, it's just the beginning: she wakes up possessed by something that isn't supposed to exist, in a world that turns out to be full of demon spirits she never knew about. The only person who can help is a Taoist exorcist who saves her life and then, out of necessity, becomes her roommate — the spirit in her can't be removed quickly, so the two of them are stuck together while he works the problem. What starts as an inconvenient arrangement turns into Xiaoran being pulled directly into his world of demon-hunting, one supernatural case at a time.

The art is the first thing readers bring up, and for good reason — Formless Form renders its demons and supernatural set pieces with a level of detail and atmosphere that a lot of similar Chinese horror-mystery manhua don't bother with. Monster designs feel specific rather than generic, and the moodier sequences hold real tension because the art earns it.

Structurally, the series works as an episodic demon-of-the-arc mystery, but it avoids feeling disconnected because the cohabitation setup between Xiaoran and the Taoist master gives every arc a consistent emotional center.
