Overview

Gachiakuta is a striking, energetic action manga with a real chip on its shoulder about waste and class. In a floating city, the wealthy live in comfort above while their garbage, and the people they deem undesirable, gets hurled into a vast abyss below. Rudo, a slum kid who lovingly repairs discarded objects, is framed for murder and cast down into that trash world, a hostile wasteland roamed by monsters born of refuse. There he falls in with the Cleaners, who fight using Givers, weapons powered by their attachment to beloved objects, and sets out for revenge and the truth. From Kei Urana, with graffiti design by Hideyoshi Andou, it's loud, stylish, and pointed. It's ongoing.

What it does well

The art is the immediate hook. The graffiti and street-art influence gives Gachiakuta a look unlike almost any other shonen, all texture, energy, and grime, and the action is dynamic and visually exciting. It grabs you on style alone.

It also has something to say. The themes about waste, class, and the value of the things and people a society throws away run through everything, giving the action real thematic weight rather than empty spectacle. It's angry in a productive, pointed way.

The power system helps too. Givers, drawing strength from a person's genuine attachment to a cherished object, is a fresh, evocative idea that ties neatly into the trash-and-value themes. Rudo is a likable, hot-tempered lead, and the whole thing moves with momentum and a fresh feel.

Where it falls short

It's early and ongoing, so the worldbuilding and pacing are still a little rough in places, with ideas introduced faster than they're fully developed. Some of the structure underneath the bold style is also familiar shonen, the framed hero, the new power, the climb, so it's not as novel in shape as it is in look.

And of course there's no ending yet. It's a promising series still proving itself, which means committing now is a bet on where it's going.

Gachiakuta is a stylish, thematically sharp action shonen with a fantastic look and real potential, and an easy recommendation for fans of distinctive, energetic action. Go in for the graffiti-soaked art, the waste-and-class themes, and Rudo's anger rather than a polished, finished story. If you want something complete or free of standard shonen beats, it's early and familiar in spots, but as one of the freshest-looking new action manga around, it's well worth watching, with an anime now bringing it to a wider audience.
