Is GALAXIAS Worth Reading? Review & Where to Read

By Next Panel Editorial2 min read
GALAXIAS cover - Next Panel review

Quick Answer

Yes, if you want a shonen fantasy adventure with a real investigative hook running underneath the action. It's early, but the central mystery gives it more direction than most new series in its genre.

Quick Verdict

MangaMinor SpoilersOngoing
7.3out of 10

“GALAXIAS pairs likable, mismatched leads with an actual mystery to solve, and that combination carries it further than its fairly familiar fantasy trappings would suggest on their own.”

Best for: Readers who want a fantasy adventure built around a father's disappearance and a genuine whodunit, not just a journey from town to town.

Not for: Readers who want a fully fleshed-out world and cast right away rather than one still being built a few volumes in.

Overview

More than ten years after the Dragon King was assassinated, Geo is a human girl living in a quiet region of dragonfolk, dreaming of a bigger life than the one in front of her. That life arrives faster than she expects when she meets Neraid, an amnesiac dragonfolk with serious strength and no memory of who he is. Through him, Geo learns her own father, the explorer Yuri Holst, is being blamed for the Dragon King's death — and with a dragon knight named Yerkes on their trail, the two of them set out to find Yuri and the truth behind what actually happened.

What it does well

GALAXIAS earns its hook by giving its adventure an actual destination. Instead of a loose, episodic journey, every stretch of the story is pushing toward two specific goals — clearing Yuri's name and recovering Neraid's memory — which gives even early, world-establishing chapters a sense of forward motion. Geo and Neraid work well as a pair for exactly that reason: her restlessness and his blank slate push against each other productively instead of one of them just trailing the other around.

Ao Hatesaka also gets real mileage out of the human/dragonfolk setting, using it for worldbuilding beats that feel specific to this story rather than generic fantasy dressing. And Yerkes, who could easily have been a flat pursuing antagonist, is set up with enough of his own investment in the truth to suggest the chase plot has more going on underneath it than a simple cat-and-mouse structure.

Where it falls short

Being a newer series shows. The world and supporting cast are still being built out, and some chapters lean more on momentum and mystery-box pull than on depth you'd get from a more established series. The central question of who actually killed the Dragon King unfolds at a patient pace, which works for the mystery but will test readers who want faster payoff.

The broader shonen-fantasy shape here — a fugitive protagonist, an amnesiac ally, a wrongly accused parent — is also familiar enough that the series is still proving it can stand apart from the pack on more than its central hook.

Verdict

GALAXIAS is an early-stage fantasy adventure that's smart enough to build itself around a real mystery instead of just a map to walk across. It hasn't fully filled in its world yet, but the central question driving Geo and Neraid forward gives it a clearer sense of purpose than most new shonen fantasy debuts, and that's worth following as it keeps unfolding.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • The setup gives the story real direction from the start: Geo's father stands accused of assassinating the Dragon King, and the search to clear his name and recover Neraid's lost memories gives every arc an actual destination instead of open-ended wandering.
  • Geo and Neraid make a well-balanced lead pair — her stubborn drive to see the wider world plays well against his amnesia and raw strength, and neither one overshadows the other.
  • The human-and-dragonfolk setting gives Hatesaka room for some genuinely inventive worldbuilding beats without the story getting bogged down explaining all of it at once.
  • Yerkes, the dragon knight pursuing them, is set up as more than a generic obstacle — there's a real sense he has his own stake in finding the truth, which keeps the chase dynamic from feeling one-note.

Weaknesses

  • As a newer series, the world and supporting cast are still being filled in, so some early chapters lean more on momentum than on depth.
  • The central mystery — who really killed the Dragon King — unfolds gradually, which means readers wanting fast answers will need to be patient.
  • The shonen-fantasy foundation (a hunted protagonist, an amnesiac companion, a wrongly accused parent) is familiar territory, and the series is still working to distinguish itself beyond its hook.

Similar Titles

  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

A different pace and tone, but shares a fantasy world built on digging into a past event's hidden truth.

  • The Seven Deadly Sins

Similar fugitive-protagonist energy and a quest built around clearing a falsely accused figure's name.

  • Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai

A comparable human-and-dragonkin adventure fantasy for readers who want a classic quest structure.
