Is Haikyu!! Worth Reading? Spoiler-Light Manga Review

Overview

Haikyu!! is a volleyball series by Haruichi Furudate. Shoyo Hinata is short for the sport but ferociously determined, and he joins his high school's team alongside Tobio Kageyama, a gifted setter who used to be his rival. Together they try to drag the team up through Japan's competitive high-school circuit. It's complete in forty-five volumes, and this review stays spoiler-free.

What it does well

Judged as what it is — a sports manga — Haikyu!! is close to the top of the genre. Its biggest trick is making volleyball genuinely thrilling and easy to follow even if you've never watched a match. The rules, the positions, and the momentum swings are all clear, so every rally carries tension and you always understand why a point matters.

The cast is the other reason it's beloved. Haikyu!! gives real attention not just to its own team but to the rivals across the net, so by the time a big match arrives you often care about both sides. Wins feel earned and losses genuinely sting, because the series did the work to make these kids matter.

It's also expertly paced for emotional payoff. Furudate builds and builds, then delivers — the high points are some of the most exciting sequences in any sports manga, and the art gets across speed and motion beautifully.

Where it falls short

The structure is, by nature, repetitive: it's a long run of practice, build-up, and tournament matches. That rhythm is the appeal, but if match-after-match isn't your thing, the format won't change your mind.

The cast is also huge, and with so many teams and players it takes a while to keep everyone straight. And it's a slow burn — the early volumes are about laying foundations more than big payoffs, so it asks for some patience up front.

Verdict

Haikyu!! is one of the best sports manga ever made, full stop. It makes its sport exciting, its cast lovable on both sides of the net, and its big moments genuinely rousing, all the way to a complete finish. If you're open to a sports story at all, it's a near-essential pick. If you actively dislike the genre, it's good enough to be worth a try anyway.
