Is Historie Worth Reading?

Overview

Historie is Hitoshi Iwaaki's decades-long project reconstructing the early life of Eumenes, the man who'd go on to become secretary and general under Alexander the Great. The manga picks him up as a boy in barbarian dress, quick enough with words and numbers to talk his way out of slavery and into the orbit of Aristotle himself, then follows his slow, often brutal climb from outsider to indispensable strategist. Readers who know Iwaaki from Parasyte are in for a hard turn away from body horror and into painstaking historical reconstruction, covering Macedonia, Persia, and the world right before Alexander's conquests reshaped it, but the same fascination with an outsider figuring out how to survive a world stacked against him carries over intact.

What it does well

The history is the draw, and it's handled with real rigor. Iwaaki researches Greek warfare, politics, and daily life closely enough that set pieces like the Siege of Cardia or the political buildup to Chaeronea read as argued history rather than costume adventure. Eumenes himself is the better hook, though: a Scythian-born Greek who has to out-think everyone around him because he'll never out-muscle them, which gives the manga a running thread of negotiation and rhetorical maneuvering instead of straightforward action. The art matches the ambition. Crowd scenes, armor, and terrain are drawn with a density that makes the ancient world feel inhabited rather than staged for effect. Where it falls short

The obvious problem is the release schedule. Historie has run, on and off, since 2003, and sits at twelve volumes and an indefinite hiatus as of 2024. Iwaaki's research-heavy method means years can pass between chapters, and there's no guarantee the story ever reaches Eumenes' adult career at all. That's a real cost to know about going in: this is a manga you read for the ground already covered, not a promise of a finished arc. The early volumes also ask for patience before the political stakes click into place, and the same density that makes the history convincing can slow scenes a more conventional adventure series would move through quickly.

Verdict

Worth reading for anyone who wants ancient Greek history rendered with genuine care and a protagonist who wins with his head instead of a sword, provided you can accept going in that it may never finish. Historie delivers some of the best-researched historical fiction manga has produced within the chapters that exist, but the hiatus is a legitimate dealbreaker for readers who need closure before they invest.
