Overview

Hunter x Hunter is an action-adventure by Yoshihiro Togashi. Gon Freecss sets out to become a Hunter — a licensed elite who chases treasure, beasts, and bounties — partly to find the father who left him to do the same. Along the way he picks up a small group of friends, and the world keeps revealing itself to be deeper and more dangerous than it first looks. The series is ongoing and has spent long stretches on hiatus, so it isn't finished. This review stays spoiler-free.

What it does well

Hunter x Hunter is one of the smartest action manga around, and the main reason is its power system, Nen. It's flexible, rule-based, and genuinely clever, and the best fights are won with planning, bluffs, and hard limits rather than raw strength. When two prepared characters clash here, it reads more like a tactical puzzle than a slugfest.

It's also unusually willing to break shonen convention. The story sidelines its hero when the plot calls for it, lets villains be complex and sometimes win, and follows its ideas into surprisingly dark places. A couple of its arcs are widely considered some of the best the genre has ever produced, and they earn that reputation.

Togashi's writing trusts the reader. He'll set up a situation and let consequences play out with real weight, and the payoffs land because the rules were laid out honestly. It rewards paying attention.

Where it falls short

The elephant in the room is the hiatus. The series stops for long periods and is unfinished, so you should go in expecting an incomplete story that may stay that way.

The later arcs also get dense — at times the pages turn almost text-heavy, with long passages explaining tactics and politics — which some readers find brilliant and others find a slog. And the art quality visibly fluctuates, especially in the rougher hiatus-adjacent stretches.

Verdict

Hunter x Hunter is essential reading for anyone who wants action with a real brain behind it, and its best arcs are about as good as the genre gets. The catch is real, though: it's unfinished and prone to long disappearances, so read it for the journey and the standout arcs, not for a tidy ending. If you can accept that, it's one of the most rewarding manga out there.
