Overview

Kagome Higurashi falls down a well on her family's shrine grounds and lands five hundred years in the past, in a feudal Japan crawling with demons. There she meets Inuyasha, a short-tempered half-demon pinned to a tree by an arrow for fifty years, and accidentally frees him while triggering the shattering of the Shikon Jewel, a powerful relic that had been sealed inside her own past-life body. Cursed to spend her time bouncing between eras, Kagome and Inuyasha team up, however reluctantly, to hunt down the jewel's scattered shards before they fall into worse hands.

What it does well

This is Rumiko Takahashi working at the height of her powers, and it shows in how effortlessly the story blends genuinely funny, bickering-romance comedy with real stakes, real loss, and a sprawling, well-realized cast of demons, humans, and half-demons who get real motivations rather than serving as disposable monsters-of-the-week. Kagome and Inuyasha's relationship is the emotional spine of the whole series, and Takahashi lets it develop slowly and believably across the entire run instead of rushing it or stalling it out. The supporting cast, Miroku, Sango, Shippo, Sesshomaru, all get real arcs of their own and get folded into the central story with real care rather than existing purely as comic relief. And at 56 complete volumes, it's a genuinely massive, satisfying body of work from one of manga's most decorated creators, one that's stayed a genre touchstone for decades.

Where it falls short

At 56 volumes, this is a serious time commitment, one of the longest complete runs many readers will encounter, and the early-to-mid stretch leans on a demon-of-the-week structure that can feel repetitive if you're reading in a hurry rather than following it as it originally released. It's also firmly a product of its era: some of its comedic beats, fanservice gags, certain side-character antics, read as dated by today's standards even if they were unremarkable for a 90s Shonen Sunday series. And because the central romance is deliberately, famously slow-burn, readers looking for a faster or more direct romantic throughline may find the pacing frustrating in the middle volumes.

Verdict

If a genre-defining blend of demon-hunting action, real emotional stakes, and a slow-burn central romance sounds appealing, from one of manga's most celebrated creators, this has earned its status as a classic many times over. Just know upfront that 56 volumes is a real commitment.
