It's also smarter about social anxiety than it needs to be. Oda renders Komi's panic — the racing thoughts, the frozen words, the dread of ordinary interactions — with real empathy and recognizable detail, and the series treats her struggle with respect rather than as a mere gimmick. For anxious readers especially, it can feel seen.

And it's funny and inventive in its presentation. Much of the comedy comes from Komi "speaking" by writing on a notepad or through frantic expressions, and the cast of escalating weirdos who become her friends keeps the gags coming. Oda's clean, expressive art sells both the humor and the heart.

Where it falls short

It gets repetitive and sprawling. Once the premise is established, the series becomes very episodic — a parade of new quirky classmates, each with one exaggerated trait, introduced in a similar "Komi makes another friend" rhythm. It's pleasant, but across 37 volumes the formula can feel padded, and some side characters are far more one-note than Komi and Tadano.

The plot is also thin by design. This is a gentle, low-stakes hangout, so readers wanting momentum or a strong throughline may find it drifts, and the slow-burn romance is so slow that it can frustrate. It's comfort food: charming and warm, but not exactly substantial, and best enjoyed in unhurried doses rather than marathoned.
