Kubera is an epic fantasy webtoon by Currygom that's been running for well over a decade. It starts simply: a girl named Leez loses her village to a sudden disaster and sets out across a world where humans, gods, and other beings share an uneasy existence. She falls in with a calm, secretive magician named Asha, and what looks like a small survival-and-revenge story slowly opens up into something much bigger, about fate, gods, and the price of the choices people make. If you want a fantasy with real scope and a plot that rewards paying attention, Kubera is a deep well.

What it does well

The world-building is the headline. Currygom built a setting with its own rules for magic, names, gods, and history, and it all holds together under pressure. Details you barely notice early on turn out to matter a lot later, and the foreshadowing is some of the best you'll find in the medium. Reading it a second time, you catch setups you completely missed the first time.

The emotional weight is real, too. This is a story where choices cost something, and the book is willing to follow them to painful places instead of pulling its punches. Characters you like make hard calls, suffer for them, and change, so the stakes feel earned rather than handed to you.

It also trusts you to keep up. Kubera doesn't stop to over-explain or recap every thread; it expects you to hold details in your head and connect them yourself. For the right reader, that respect is a big part of the appeal, and the payoffs land harder because you did the work to get there.

Where it falls short

It's a slow starter, and the early art shows its age. The first season looks rough next to the later chapters, and it takes a while before the story reveals how much it's actually juggling. Plenty of readers bounce off before it gets going.

It's also dense and demanding. The cast is large, the lore is heavy, and reading it in big gaps makes the plot genuinely hard to follow. This isn't a series you can half-watch on a phone between other things, and it asks for more commitment than most webtoons do.

Verdict

Kubera asks for patience and pays it back with interest. The early chapters are a hill to climb, and the slow build and dated early art are real barriers. But stick with it and you get one of the most ambitious, carefully constructed fantasy stories in webtoons, with foreshadowing and emotional payoffs that few series match. It's not a casual read, and it's better for it.
