What it does well

The Scythe Demon framing is the hook, and the manhwa commits to it fully. All Jeong isn't a reluctant hero forced into violence — he's genuinely ruthless and sometimes outright frightening. Plenty of revenge stories flinch at the last second and soften their lead back into a standard shonen-style hero; this one doesn't. His cruelty has a logic to it, the story lets him be scary without constantly excusing him, and reading his rise often feels closer to a villain's origin than a hero's journey. That's exactly what gives the revenge plot its edge.

The historical murim setting is richly built. Sects, spirits, martial arts hierarchies, and supernatural elements are woven together into a dark, atmospheric world instead of a generic backdrop, and the ghost-and-spirit layer gives the fights a flavor most murim series don't have. Kim Tae Hyung's full-color art handles both sides of that equation well — the brutality of the combat reads clearly, and the eerie supernatural sequences feel genuinely unsettling rather than decorative. The series has picked up real recognition for it, landing award nominations alongside consistently strong reader ratings.

Where it falls short

This is a Mature-rated series, and the violence, blood, and general darkness are constant. That's the point, but it means the tone almost never lets up — if you need levity or warmth to break the grimness, you won't find much here. The English WEBTOON release updates weekly, so catching up to the current chapter takes patience rather than a weekend binge.

The lead is also a real filter. With a genuinely cruel, sometimes sociopathic protagonist at the center, readers who need a traditionally likable or morally uncomplicated lead may find All Jeong a tough sell even with his sympathetic backstory. And if you're new to murim stories, the sect terminology takes some adjusting before the world fully clicks.

Verdict

If a dark, richly built historical revenge story with a genuinely ruthless protagonist sounds appealing, this delivers a distinctive, well-drawn take on the murim genre backed by real critical recognition. It's uncompromisingly grim, but that's clearly the point.
