Overview

Chankyu Kim wants to be popular, so he teaches himself hypnosis from YouTube videos, hoping it'll help him with girls at school. It doesn't work the way he plans — his attempts mostly fail or backfire — until he runs into Euijoo Yeo, who has an actual, functioning psychic ability: mind reading. From there, Psychic Studies becomes a school comedy built around the gap between people who fake having powers, people who genuinely have them, and the chaos that happens when those two groups collide.

What it does well

The central joke is a strong one and the series leans into it well: Chankyu is a fraud who desperately wants his hypnosis to work, and watching him bluff, fail, and occasionally stumble into a real result is a solid comedy engine that carries a lot of chapters on its own. Once more characters with real, quirky powers start showing up, the cast dynamic gets more interesting — everyone's ability has some kind of limitation or downside, so the comedy comes from characters trying to work around their own flaws rather than just having cool powers for the sake of it. Chankyu himself is more self-interested and prickly than the average nice protagonist, and that edge makes some of the humor sharper than a straightforwardly wholesome comedy would manage. The chapters are short and quick, which makes this an easy series to burn through in a sitting or two.

Where it falls short

The power system is loose — abilities show up, get used for a gag, and sometimes get bent or forgotten depending on what a given chapter needs, which is fine for pure comedy but means don't expect it to hold together as a consistent rule set. The humor also leans crude or shock-based at points, which some readers will love and others will bounce off. And while the cast and plot threads keep expanding as the series goes, not everything that gets set up pays off with a satisfying resolution by the time it wraps.

Verdict

Psychic Studies isn't trying to be a deep supernatural drama — it's a fast, joke-first school comedy that uses hypnosis and mind-reading as an excuse for chaos, and on that level it mostly works. Go in for the gags, not the power-system logic, and it delivers a fun, breezy read.
