Overview

Sweet Home is a Korean horror webtoon with a killer hook. Cha Hyun-soo is a withdrawn, depressed teenager who, after losing his whole family, moves alone into a rundown apartment building just as the world starts to end: people everywhere begin turning into monsters shaped by their deepest desires. Trapped inside with the other residents, Hyun-soo has to survive the creatures outside, the fear within, and the unsettling signs that he might be turning into something himself. It's bleak, tense, and surprisingly emotional, and it's complete, so the whole story is there to read. One heads-up: it deals heavily with despair and suicide.

What it does well

The horror is the obvious strength. The monsters are inventive and genuinely disturbing, each one warped by a human craving in a way that sticks with you, and the art renders them with real menace. The early apartment-under-siege stretch is fantastic survival horror: claustrophobic, tense, and full of dread.

Underneath the scares, it's a story about despair and what keeps people human. Hyun-soo begins the series wanting to die, and his slow shift toward fighting to live, and to protect others, gives the horror genuine emotional weight. The monsters being literal manifestations of desire turn the whole thing into a question about what we'd become if our worst impulses took over. That thematic spine is what lifts it above standard monster fare.

The trapped-residents ensemble works too. The building becomes its own pressure cooker of alliances, selfishness, and small acts of courage, and the human conflict is often as tense as the monster attacks. Color and paneling build a constant sense of unease.

Where it falls short

The big issue is the later stretch. The tight, contained survival horror of the early arcs gradually opens into a bigger, messier story of military factions, conspiracies, and more sci-fi-leaning turns, and a lot of readers feel it loses the focus that made it gripping. How you feel about the ending is a real coin flip.

The large cast is a mixed bag too, with some residents vivid and others thin or dispatched before they land, and the pacing sags in places once the scope widens. It's also relentlessly heavy, with gore, body horror, and dark psychological content throughout, so it's not a casual read. If you want the lean, scary apartment story all the way through, the expanding plot may disappoint.

Verdict

Sweet Home is one of the stronger horror webtoons out there, with inventive monsters, real emotional depth, and a fantastic opening stretch. Go in for the survival horror and the human drama, and brace for a bleak tone and a latter half that trades tight dread for sprawl. If you can roll with the messier later arcs, it's a memorable, genuinely scary read, and being complete, it's an easy one to commit to.
