What it does well

Wang Lin's arc from an ordinary, disposable pawn to someone genuinely dangerous is earned through consistent, hard-won choices rather than a lucky artifact or a hidden bloodline doing the work for him. The story doesn't flinch from the actual cost of cultivation-world survival: betrayal, loss, and compromise pile up, and Wang Lin becomes harder and more calculating in ways the manhua treats as real character change rather than a costume swap.

That moral seriousness sets it apart from a lot of the genre's more straightforwardly triumphant power fantasies, and it's a big part of why the source novel became as influential as it did within xianxia fandom.

Where it falls short

The manhua adaptation compresses a genuinely massive novel, and it shows in pacing that can feel rushed relative to the sprawling worldbuilding underneath it. Entire arcs and factions get less room to breathe here than the source material affords them. The art, while competent, doesn't always keep pace with the story's scale and can feel like it's rushing through moments that should land harder.

There's also no official English platform for the manhua specifically, so reading it in English currently means relying on unofficial scanlation sites rather than a legitimate option, unlike the novel, which does have official English translations available.
