The Classmate is a WEBTOON Original by sooriboo that began in August 2025. Eun-Ha, bullied at school, gets talked into performing a ghost-summoning ritual as a cruel prank -- except it works, and she ends up bound to Hae-Su, a spirit who claims to be on her side and starts taking violent revenge on the people who've been tormenting her. The catch is that Eun-Ha isn't sure she wants that kind of help, and the deeper mystery of who Hae-Su actually was becomes just as important as the bullying plot that started everything.

What it does well

The smartest choice the series makes is refusing to let Hae-Su be a simple wish-fulfillment fix for Eun-Ha's problems. He's on her side, more or less, but his idea of helping is violent enough that she spends as much time worried about him as grateful for him. That tension keeps the horror grounded in something more interesting than "bullies get what's coming to them" -- it's really about what it costs to accept help you didn't fully agree to and can't fully control.

The mystery side of the story pulls its weight too. Hae-Su's past isn't just spooky set dressing; the series treats figuring out who he was, and why he's bound to Eun-Ha in particular, as an actual ongoing question with its own momentum, separate from whatever's happening with the bullies that week. That gives the story two engines running at once instead of one repeating loop of provocation and payback.

And because Hae-Su is written as unsettling even while he's technically an ally, the tone stays properly horror instead of drifting into straightforward revenge-fantasy catharsis. The series is comfortable making you uneasy about the character you're supposed to be rooting for, which is a harder balance to hold than it sounds.

Where it falls short

As an ongoing, relatively new series, a lot of what makes this premise interesting is still a promise rather than a finished argument. The mystery around Hae-Su is compelling, but there's no way yet to know if the reveal will match the buildup, and that's worth going in aware of.

The earliest chapters also spend real time in fairly standard bullying-revenge webtoon territory before the ghost-mystery angle fully takes over, so the opening is a little more familiar than the series ends up being once it finds its footing.

The Classmate is a horror webtoon with more moral complexity than its premise suggests, built around a genuinely uneasy central relationship instead of a clean good-versus-bad revenge story. It's asking for some patience while its mystery unfolds, but the tension it's building so far is real.
