The Ravages of Time is a retelling of China's Three Kingdoms — the same era as Romance of the Three Kingdoms — but stripped of romance and idealism and rebuilt as a cold, brilliant game of strategy. Where the classic novel has noble heroes, Chen Mou's version sees scheming, manipulation, and realpolitik beneath every famous name. The story largely follows a young, cunning Sima Yi and the elite Sima clan, along with an assassin order, as they navigate — and quietly steer — the collapse of the Han dynasty. It's a Hong Kong manhua by Chen Mou, serialized since 2001 and now past 75 volumes, and it's widely regarded as one of the finest comics to come out of the region.

What it does well

It is fiercely intelligent. The appeal isn't spectacle — it's watching brilliant people out-think each other. Every battle is really a chess match, every conversation a layered negotiation, and the pleasure comes from following the schemes within schemes as characters bluff, betray, and counter-plot. Few comics in any language take strategy and political intrigue this seriously or pull them off this well.

Its take on the material is the other draw. By reinterpreting beloved, mythologized figures as calculating operators with hidden motives, it makes a story everyone "knows" feel dangerous and new. Characters are morally gray and genuinely complex, and the cynical, adult lens — power is a game, history is written by the survivors — gives it real weight.

And later on, the art is superb. Chen Mou's style grows into something distinctive and powerful, with striking action and a strong sense of drama. When it wants to land a moment, it lands it hard.

Where it falls short

It is genuinely hard to read, and that's the main barrier. The cast is enormous, the plotting is dense, and the schemes can be tough to track — it expects you to pay close attention and rewards re-reading. Newcomers, especially without grounding in the Three Kingdoms, can find it bewildering. The early-volume art is also rougher and more dated than the later work, which can be a tough first impression.

The bigger practical problem is access. There's no easy official English release, so most readers are stuck with imports or fan translations of varying quality — a real shame for a series this good, and a genuine obstacle to recommending it casually.

Verdict

The Ravages of Time is a masterpiece for a specific reader: someone who wants a dense, cerebral, morally complex war epic where the real battles are fought in people's heads. It's demanding, its art takes time to bloom, and its lack of an easy English edition is a serious hurdle. But if you put in the effort, there's nothing quite like it — one of the smartest historical comics ever made. Patient strategy fans should seek it out.
