Overview

Fabre built his entire online following on getting bitten by dangerous animals for the camera, so getting bitten by a black mamba mid-stream is just another Tuesday, until it actually kills him and he wakes up in Murim: a wuxia world of martial sects and poison clans, right in the middle of a jungle full of the exact venomous creatures he spent his old life studying. He's perfectly happy to just farm poison bugs in peace, but the Sichuan Tang Clan, the setting's reigning masters of poison and dirty tricks, finds him first, and his encyclopedic real-world entomology knowledge turns out to be exactly the edge a poison clan didn't know it needed.

What it does well

The premise gives Fabre a genuinely useful, specific skill set instead of the usual secretly-overpowered isekai default. His knowledge of real insects and venom translates directly into a niche nobody else in Murim can fill, and the story gets real mileage out of a modern-knowledge protagonist solving genre-standard poison-clan problems with actual entomology instead of hand-waved magic.

The Tang Clan setting is also a fun choice. Poison and hidden weapons are a wuxia staple that doesn't get the spotlight nearly as often as swordsmanship does, and building the story around that specialty gives it a different texture than the usual murim power fantasy. The art keeps the insect and poison detail work genuinely interesting rather than just gross-out set dressing.

Where it falls short

This is a newer series, started in 2024, still finding its rhythm. Early chapters spend real time on setup and clan politics before the modern-entomologist hook gets to do its most interesting work, and the pacing can feel slower than the premise's energy promises. Being ongoing and relatively fresh also means there's no way to know yet whether the story sustains its central gimmick over a long run the way more established murim series have proven they can.

Verdict

Fresh, specifically-skilled spin on the reincarnated-into-Murim formula that finds a genuinely underused niche, poison and insects, to build its hook around. Worth reading if you want murim fiction with a different specialty than the usual sword-focused power fantasy. It's new enough that the long-term payoff is still an open question.
