Overview
Rosa Park has bad luck with crushes. Her first one dumps her the moment she confesses, and her second - Doryeong Han, the country's most beloved superpowered police officer - only notices her because he happens to save her from a collapsing building. Years pass. Rosa never gets over him, and when a masked vigilante-turned-villain called Blackdog starts causing trouble in the city, Doryeong can't shake the feeling that something about this new threat is familiar. It's Rosa, of course, and the rest of the series is the two of them circling each other without either one fully realizing what's going on.
It's a secret-identity romance built on a very simple hook - the hero slowly falling for the woman he's supposed to be hunting - and it mostly knows how silly that premise is.
What it does well
The comedy is the strongest card here. Rosa isn't a brooding antihero; she's an ordinary woman who stumbled into supervillainy and treats most of it with the same exasperation she'd bring to a bad day at work, and that tone keeps the whole "secretly a wanted criminal" plot from taking itself too seriously. The gag-to-drama ratio is well balanced - there are real stakes once the main conflict kicks in, but the series never forgets it's a rom-com first.
Doryeong works as a foil specifically because he's a little dense. He's powerful, earnest, and completely incapable of putting two and two together about Rosa, which makes the dramatic irony - we know, he doesn't - the engine of a lot of the series' best chapters. Watching him fall for Blackdog while still carrying a torch for Rosa, not realizing they're the same person, is a solid, well-executed bit that the manhwa milks for a long stretch without it going stale.
The pacing also deserves credit. At just over 120 chapters it doesn't overstay its welcome - the identity-reveal arc lands with real weight because the series hasn't dragged the mystery out past the point of being fun.
Where it falls short
The art and action choreography are serviceable rather than impressive - if you're coming to a superpowered cop-and-villain story expecting standout fight scenes, you'll be mildly disappointed. The powers themselves are mostly a backdrop for the romance plot, not a showcase in their own right.
The side cast also thins out fast. A handful of named supporting characters show up early and get interesting hooks, but several don't get much payoff once the Rosa-Doryeong plot takes over completely in the final third.
Verdict
Villain with a Crush knows exactly what kind of story it's telling and executes the hero/villain secret-identity romance about as cleanly as that premise allows. It won't win anyone over with its action or its art, but if you want a rom-com that's genuinely funny, keeps its dramatic irony sharp for most of its run, and doesn't pad itself out, it delivers.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
- The dramatic irony of the hero falling for the villain without realizing she's the same woman he's already in love with is well-executed and stays funny for most of the run.
- Rosa's exasperated, down-to-earth reaction to becoming a supervillain keeps the tone light without undercutting the real stakes once they arrive.
- The pacing is tight for a webtoon this length — the identity-reveal arc lands because the mystery isn't dragged out past the point of being fun.
- It balances comedy and romance well, never losing its sense of humor even as the plot gets more serious.
Weaknesses
- The action and power-based fight scenes are mostly backdrop, so it won't satisfy readers looking for strong action choreography.
- Several supporting characters get interesting early hooks that don't pay off once the main couple's plot takes over in the final third.
- The art is solid but unremarkable — it won't be the reason you remember this one.
