7.2out of 10

“Compact and visually gorgeous: a fantasy romance that trades CLAMP's usual sprawling mythology for a tighter, more intimate story.”

Best for: CLAMP fans and shojo fantasy readers who want a quick, complete story rather than a long-running series commitment.

Not for: Readers hoping for the dense interconnected mythology CLAMP is known for in series like X or Tsubasa, since Wish keeps its scope deliberately small.

Overview

Wish opens with a simple fairy-tale premise: cynical, overworked doctor Shuichiro Kudou finds an angel named Kohaku trapped in a tree and, mostly out of pragmatism, frees her. As a reward, Kohaku insists on granting him a wish — but Shuichiro, uninterested in material rewards, instead asks her to simply stay and keep him company, which sets off a slow-building, off-kilter romance between a jaded human and a literal, otherworldly being who's not quite used to ordinary human life. Created by CLAMP across just 4 volumes, Wish is a noticeably more contained story than the collective's famously sprawling, interconnected fantasy epics.

That smaller scope is part of the appeal. Where CLAMP's bigger series like X or Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle build out dense, overlapping mythologies, Wish keeps its focus tight: one grumpy doctor, one devoted angel, and a supporting cast of other celestial and demonic beings who orbit their relationship rather than dragging it into a bigger cosmic plot. It reads almost like a CLAMP palate cleanser — all their signature visual elegance, with a fraction of the narrative sprawl.

What it does well

The central relationship carries the story well. Shuichiro's prickly reluctance to accept help or affection from anyone, human or otherwise, makes Kohaku's earnest devotion land as genuinely sweet rather than saccharine, and watching him slowly let his guard down over four volumes gives the romance real room to breathe without overstaying its welcome. It's a smaller, gentler story than most of what CLAMP is known for, and it's confident enough in that smallness to not pad itself out.

The art, unsurprisingly for CLAMP, is a highlight throughout — intricate linework, striking character designs for the angel and demon cast, and the kind of visual polish that's consistent across the collective's catalog regardless of how big or small the story itself is.

Where it falls short

The biggest obstacle for new readers is availability. Wish has bounced between English publishers over the years — a Tokyopop print run, a brief Dark Horse edition, and a digital release from VIZ — but all of those licenses have since lapsed, so there's currently no straightforward way to buy a fresh copy through official channels.

The story's tight scope, while a strength, also means less room for the kind of worldbuilding CLAMP fans might be hoping for. Several of the angel and demon supporting characters get interesting introductions but less follow-through than the central couple, since the story is clearly more interested in Shuichiro and Kohaku than in the wider cosmology around them.

Verdict

Wish is a smaller, gentler entry in CLAMP's catalog, and that smallness works in its favor: it's a complete, visually gorgeous romance that doesn't ask for the kind of commitment their bigger multiverse series do. The lapsed English licenses make it harder to track down than it should be, but for CLAMP fans or shojo fantasy readers looking for a short, satisfying read, it's well worth the hunt.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • A tight, complete 4-volume story that delivers a full romance arc without CLAMP's usual sprawling, multi-series mythology.
  • The central hook — a cynical doctor rescues an angel and becomes the reluctant target of her devotion — gives the central relationship a charming, off-kilter dynamic.
  • CLAMP's elegant, detailed art style is on full display even in this shorter, lower-stakes outing.

Weaknesses

  • Multiple past English licenses (from Tokyopop, Viz, and briefly Dark Horse) have all lapsed, so there's currently no active official way to buy it new.
  • The small scope means less room for worldbuilding compared to CLAMP's more ambitious, interconnected series.
  • Some of the angel/demon supporting cast get less development than the central couple.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wish finished, and how long is it?

Yes, it's complete at just 4 volumes, making it one of CLAMP's shorter, more contained series.

Is there a current official English translation available?

Not currently in print. Wish has had English releases from Tokyopop and digitally from VIZ in the past, along with a brief Dark Horse edition, but all of those licenses have since lapsed, so new official copies aren't currently available.

Is Wish connected to CLAMP's other series like X or Tsubasa?

Not directly — Wish is a standalone story, unlike some of CLAMP's more famously interconnected multiverse series.

Is Wish more comedy or romance focused?

Both in roughly equal measure — it opens with a lighthearted fairy-tale premise and builds into a sincere, slow-burn romance between its two leads.
