That would be a modest goal in most stories, but Zombie X Slasher isn't set in most stories -- it's set in a zombie apocalypse where inflation has gone through the roof and a house is now hopelessly out of reach for someone like him. His way out: a bounty that pays out per zombie killed, with 7,900 kills standing between Cheolsu and the down payment on his dream home. What follows is a premise played almost entirely straight, which is exactly why it's funny -- a housing-crisis satire wearing a zombie-slasher's face.

What it does well

The hook here is genuinely clever, and the opening chapter is where Zombie X Slasher is at its best -- readers across multiple platforms single it out as close to perfect, landing the joke, the stakes, and the tone in one go. Turning a zombie apocalypse into an absurd extension of a housing crisis gives the series an angle that a crowded genre doesn't get very often, and for a stretch, the combination of dark comedy and genuinely brutal, well-drawn violence works.

The supporting cast has at least one clear standout: a side character fans nicknamed "Fisher Grandpa" gets consistently singled out as the best-written part of the book, someone whose presence readers actively look forward to in a cast that otherwise struggles to hold attention. And when the fights are firing, the art sells the frantic, overwhelmed energy of a man cutting through wave after wave of the undead for a paycheck.

Where it falls short

The drop-off after that opening chapter is the most consistent complaint across reader reviews, and it's a real one. Cheolsu himself pulls a lot of criticism -- readers describe him as grating rather than endearing once the initial joke wears off, and a supporting "girl boss" character introduced not long after gets called out repeatedly for thin, cliché writing. Female characters in general don't get much room to be more than functional. Fight choreography that impresses early on starts recycling the same beats by the later chapters covered in the English release, which undercuts some of the initial momentum.

The bigger issue for anyone trying to actually read this series in English: what's officially available doesn't match what the data says exists. The Korean original ran a full 92 chapters on Naver Webtoon from 2023 to 2025 and reached a real ending. The English WEBTOON release, by contrast, stopped at seven episodes in 2023 and was marked complete as its own self-contained unit -- there's no official continuation. If you go in expecting the full story other databases list, you'll hit a wall a lot sooner than you'd expect.

Verdict

Zombie X Slasher has a premise good enough to make its first chapter a genuine highlight of the zombie-manhwa space, and a supporting cast that has at least one real fan favorite. But the writing around Cheolsu himself wears thin fast, and the practical reality for English readers is a bigger problem than any of that: what's officially available is a short, complete arc, not the much longer story the Korean original tells. Read it for the premise and the opening chapter, but go in knowing you're getting a fraction of the whole.
