Overview

Gron died a legend, the hero who fell alongside the Demon Emperor in the war's final battle. Five years later, his soul wakes up back in the world — inside the body of the single weakest demon in the enemy's own camp. That body carries a dormant power of its own, though: an ancient Serpent God's evolutionary strength, which Gron's return awakens. Now a feared human hero has to operate from inside demon territory, in a body nobody respects, while that power slowly starts to grow.

What it does well

The central irony carries the opening chapters well. There's a real charge to watching someone who used to terrify the demon army now scraping by as the weakest member of their ranks, and the story gets reasonable mileage out of that mismatch between Gron's reputation and his current standing before the power climb properly kicks in.

The evolution mechanic is a smart choice for keeping that climb visually interesting. Rather than a purely numerical stat increase, Gron's strength is tied to physical, visible transformation, which gives the art something concrete to show as he grows stronger instead of just narrating bigger numbers. When the story does move into large-scale action, the full-color art handles the scale of those fights well, even in stretches where the plotting around them is fairly standard.

The two-front setup — Gron still connected to the human side he used to fight for, now operating from inside the demon camp — gives the story more structural options than a straightforward one-side power fantasy, and there's real potential in how those two war fronts could eventually intersect.

Where it falls short

The premise itself is well-worn territory. Reincarnation into a weak body with a hidden ancient power is a heavily populated corner of the genre, and this manhua hasn't yet done much to set itself apart from the many similar series covering the same ground.

The cast outside Gron doesn't get much room to be more than functional. Allies and enemies mostly exist to mark how much stronger he's gotten rather than carrying real stakes of their own, and the dialogue often reaches for familiar genre lines instead of earning its bigger emotional moments. That combination keeps the story competent rather than distinctive.

A Mountain of Corpses, A Sea of Blood has a genuinely fun premise in a feared hero forced to rebuild from the bottom of the enemy's own ranks, and the evolution-power hook gives that climb some visual interest. It's a solidly executed, familiar entry in a crowded genre rather than a standout one — worth a look if you already like this specific trope, less essential if you're looking for something that reinvents it.
