Overview

Gu Changge wakes up transmigrated into a cultivation world, in the body of the story's designated villain, the guy every "Son of Fate" protagonist is destined to defeat on the way to greatness. Most stories built on this premise have their lead try to dodge the villain role or secretly be a good person underneath. Gu Changge doesn't bother. He leans all the way in, using his foreknowledge of how these stories go to systematically out-maneuver, outclass, and harvest the luck of every chosen protagonist who comes looking for him.

Adapted from Chen Dong's web novel and published by Kuaikan Comics, the manhua has been running since 2021 and is still ongoing, with an official English release on INKR alongside several other licensed platforms.

What it does well

The core hook works because Gu Changge is written and drawn as genuinely dangerous rather than secretly soft. He schemes several moves ahead, treats supposed protagonists as resources to be harvested rather than rivals to begrudgingly respect, and the story is upfront that he's the strongest person in nearly every room from the start. That removes a certain kind of manufactured tension, but it replaces it with a different pleasure: watching a smart, amoral character actually get away with things instead of getting humbled every arc to reset the stakes.

The cultivation power system escalates in a way that stays legible, sects and bloodlines and cosmic-tier factions get introduced with enough context to track who's dangerous and why. The full-color art holds up well for a long-running webcomic, particularly in how it stages large-scale confrontations without losing clarity on who's doing what to whom. And unlike a lot of long-runners in this genre, the plot keeps moving forward chapter to chapter instead of stalling out in filler arcs.

Where it falls short

The harem-adjacent trappings are heavy here, Gu Changge accumulates an ever-growing roster of powerful, devoted women, and the story leans into that dynamic rather than downplaying it, which will land better for some readers than others. Side characters, protagonists and antagonists alike, mostly function as pieces on Gu Changge's board rather than people with their own arcs; the appeal is watching him work, not watching them grow. And because he's established as unbeatable early and often, most individual confrontations resolve exactly as expected, so tension comes more from anticipation of how he'll win than genuine doubt that he will.

Verdict

A well-drawn cultivation power fantasy that commits to its "villain protagonist" premise instead of hedging it into a secret hero arc, and Gu Changge is genuinely entertaining to watch operate because of that commitment. Worth reading if an unapologetically ruthless, always-three-steps-ahead lead sounds more fun than exhausting. The rotating harem and thin supporting cast are the tradeoffs that come with it.
