Overview

In a world where magical creatures called Majiks roam, only women can become Witches, hunters who gain power by defeating a Majik in a formal trial. Ichi, a feral boy raised alone on Druid Mountain after being abandoned as a child, breaks that rule when he intervenes in another witch's trial and ends up passing it himself, becoming history's first male witch. Ichi the Witch is written by Nishi Osamu, creator of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, with art by Shiro Usazaki, and has run in Weekly Shonen Jump since September 2024 — the magazine's first series created by two female creators.

What it does well

The central premise could easily have been played as a simple novelty, but Ichi the Witch treats Ichi's existence as a genuine disruption to an established social order, and takes the world's reaction to him seriously. That grounding gives the fantasy action real stakes beyond just spectacle. Ichi himself helps a lot here too — raised alone in the wild and self-taught before a traveler named Minakata trained him further, he reads as genuinely feral and distinct rather than following the usual eager-shonen-protagonist template.

Usazaki's art is a major part of why this series has generated so much buzz so quickly. Her linework on the Majiks and witch trials is sharp and atmospheric, carrying real weight in both the action and the quieter world-building moments. And the recognition has followed the quality — the series won the 11th Next Manga Award and has drawn public praise from major names like Kohei Horikoshi and Katsura Hoshino.

Where it falls short

Being a newer series is the clearest limitation here — having started in late 2024, there's simply less story banked than more established Shonen Jump titles offer, which matters if you want a lot to read right away. The full mechanics and history of the witch and Majik system are still being revealed gradually, so some worldbuilding questions are still open. And Ichi's deliberately feral characterization, while a real strength, does mean some of his early social interactions unfold more slowly than a more conventional protagonist's would.

Verdict

Ichi the Witch backs up its buzz with genuinely striking art and a fresh take on a gender-flipped magic system. One of the stronger new Shonen Jump launches in recent memory, worth getting in on early.
