But Jun Mayuzuki seeds the story with strange, unplaced details from the start, and what begins as a slice-of-life romance gradually reveals itself to be something much stranger.

What it does well

The central relationship is the manga's foundation, and it's built with real patience. Reiko and Hajime's feelings develop through small workplace moments, shared meals, quiet conversations, routine familiarity, rather than any big romantic gesture, and that restraint makes the relationship feel lived-in rather than performed. It's the kind of slow burn that trusts small gestures to carry real weight.

The setting does just as much work. Mayuzuki renders Kowloon's cramped, layered architecture with genuine texture and warmth, treating the city itself almost as a character defined by memory and nostalgia. That atmosphere is what makes the story's slow reveal of something genuinely uncanny underneath the setting land as effectively as it does; the mystery isn't bolted onto the romance, it's woven into the same sense of place that makes the love story work.

The pacing of that reveal deserves real credit. Mayuzuki plants small, unsettling details early and lets them accumulate rather than rushing an explanation, which makes the eventual unraveling of what's actually going on feel earned rather than sprung on the reader. The art supports this beautifully, using dense, cluttered paneling to reinforce both the coziness and the quiet wrongness of the setting.

Where it falls short

The deliberate pacing is a real ask. For long stretches, very little happens in a conventional plot sense, and readers who want the central mystery to move faster will find the atmosphere-first approach frustrating at times. Some early volumes in particular lean so heavily into slice-of-life rhythm that it's easy to lose track of the hook that's supposed to be building underneath.

The supporting cast also stays fairly thin compared to the attention given to Reiko and Hajime; several side characters remain more functional than fully realized, existing mainly to populate the setting rather than carrying their own arcs.

Kowloon Generic Romance is a patient, atmospheric romance that rewards close attention, using a genuinely strange sci-fi mystery to deepen rather than distract from its central relationship.
